Fairfield Terrace/Belmont
Ranch-style homes and Cape Cods
Most homes in Fairfield Terrace/Belmont were built between the 1950s and 1970s on quarter-acre or smaller lots. However, it's not uncommon to see properties as old as 1920 or as new as the '90s. "Homes in the 46807 ZIP code are more affordable than those in, say, West Central," says Robert Watson, a native of Fort Wayne and a Realtor with the North Eastern Group. "And some still give you the feel of a historic home." Mid-century adds to the neighborhood's suburban look, where homes range from $40,000 to $175,000, compared to the city median of $242,000. Quaint ranch-style homes and Cape Cods sit on lots framed by mature oaks, birches and other scenic species of deciduous trees. These properties, especially those built in the '50s and earlier, typically have two to three bedrooms and one to two bathrooms. Though many homes are a few feet apart, some sit next to empty lots waiting to be built upon. And while some houses have driveways in the front, most require parking in the street or in a back alleyway. Streets are largely lighted, and walkways typically lead from the front doors of homes to the adjoining sidewalk. Grassy borders typically buffer the sidewalks from the roadways.New playground at Kettler Park and hiking on the Rivergreenway
Kettler Park is just a few steps away from those who live on the southwest corner of the neighborhood. The 6-acre park offers a large grassy space with trees and picnic tables. Residents can visit the park to have fun on the playground installed in 2024, play on the basketball, tennis and pickleball courts or have a gathering at the picnic pavilion. Alternatively, local cyclists, runners and hikers enjoy the nearby Rivergreenway, a 26-mile linear park along the banks of the St. Marys, St. Joseph and Maumee rivers. This paved path curves around the verdant greens of the Foster Park Golf Course, another nearby recreational spot.Community meetings and block parties
The Fairfield Terrace/Belmont Neighborhood Association hosts frequent community meetings at the Shawnee Branch Allen County Public Library on the neighborhood’s southeast side. Meetings typically include a guest speaker who discusses what’s going on in the neighborhood and gives residents a chance to address any concerns. The neighborhood association also puts on an annual party at Kettler Park, which brings the community together for food, games and prizes.Shopping and dining at Southgate Plaza
Locals have direct access to Southgate Plaza on the east side of the neighborhood. It has a Kroger and Dollar Tree for groceries and other essentials. The plaza is also home to several fast-food restaurants and a few local establishments. Coney Express is an unassuming, long-standing hot dog joint with a drive-thru and a small outdoor seating area. On the southside of Fairfield Terrace/Belmont, across the street from Kettler Park, Dunbar’s BBQ serves up classic barbecue platters. The only International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Northeast Indiana
Fort Wayne Community Schools, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche, serves the neighborhood. Kids start at Harrison Hill Elementary, graded a C-plus, before going on to Kekionga Middle, graded a C. The middle school feeds into South Side High, which gets a C-plus grade and is the only high school in Northeast Indiana that offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, available to 11th and 12th graders.Citilink bus stops all around the neighborhood
Fort Wayne is largely a car-dependent city, but public transportation is accessible around Fairfield Terrace/Belmont. Citilink bus stops dot four of the neighborhood's outlying streets: Paulding Road, Fairfield Avenue, Pettit Avenue and Calhoun Street. As for commuting with personal vehicles, the nearest turn onto Lafayette Street, which runs right through downtown, is just over a mile from most homes in the neighborhood. For those traveling far, Fort Wayne International Airport is about 5 miles southwest of the neighborhood.
