Forested streets curve through northeast Fort Wayne

Glenwood Park is a northeastern Fort Wayne neighborhood known for its large, mid-century houses on forested streets in a convenient part of town. “The northeast corridor is pretty popular because it’s well-located,” says Michael Roy, a Realtor with Schrader Real Estate and Auction and Fort Wayne local. “It’s close to Purdue University at Fort Wayne, and you can get out to the interstate or shopping at Glenbrook Square quickly from here.”

Glenwood Park’s housing market is fast-paced, but not impenetrable

Ranch-style bungalows from the 1960s, split-levels from the '70s and Colonial Revival-style homes from the '80s line Glenwood Park’s streets. The spacious, manicured lots often include gardens shaded by towering oak trees. Front lawns here extend all the way to the street, and there are no sidewalks. “It’s just a good, solid neighborhood with a combination of owner-occupied and some investment, rental-type properties,” says Roy. Listing prices range between $200,000 and $275,000, on par with the city’s median. “The housing market was really, really crazy here for the last three years, but it’s cooled off a lot recently,” says Roy, adding that homes in Glenwood Park sold quickly until around June 2023. “There’s still a shortage of inventory right now, so houses are still selling, but now they’re going under contract in a couple weeks or even a month instead of within six or eight hours the way they used to,” he says.

Locals sit beneath apple trees at nearby parks

For a breath of fresh air, residents can visit Johnny Appleseed Park, 2 miles west of home. Named for John Chapman, nicknamed “Johnny Appleseed,” the park is home to the American pioneer’s final resting place and officially joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Appleseed’s gravesite is marked by his headstone, surrounded by wrought-iron fencing. A plaque detailing the man’s story stands a short distance away under a shingled shelter. The wider park includes a campground and paved multiuse trails shaded by oak and apple trees. At the north end is the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum and Exposition Center. Closer to home, Lions Park offers nearly 15 acres of outdoor recreation, with a playground, tennis and basketball courts, a multiuse field dotted with climbing trees and a baseball diamond. During cold or rainy weather, locals practice their swing at Suite Spot, an indoor golf simulator center.

Fort Wayne Public Schools ready students for college

Glenwood Park students may attend Glenwood Park Elementary, graded B-minus by Niche; Lane Middle School, graded C-plus; and R. Nelson Snider High School, graded B. Glenwood Park Elementary and Snider High, off Vance Avenue and Fairlawn Pass respectively, are both located less than a mile from most homes, so students have the option to bike or walk to class. Students interested in pursuing a career in medicine can participate in Snider High’s Project Lead the Way Biomedical Sciences program. This program includes a variety of health-related courses that offer hands-on experience.

After high school, students in the area may enroll in Purdue University at Fort Wayne, under 2 miles northwest of the neighborhood. “Glenwood Park is well located in relation to the university,” says Roy. “It’s an especially attractive neighborhood for students and the families of students.” With over 200 academic programs and more than 14,000 students, northeast Indiana’s largest public university offers locals plenty of education options close to home.

Transportation

According to Emily Ewing, a Realtor with North Eastern Group Realty, it takes around 15 minutes to drive 6 miles southwest from Glenwood Park to downtown Fort Wayne. Another way to get downtown is via public transit, provided by Citilink buses throughout Fort Wayne.

Groceries and restaurants are just around the corner

For their everyday essentials, residents head 3 miles west to the Glenbrook Square and Glenbrook Plaza shopping centers. Clustered around the corner of East Coliseum Boulevard and Coldwater Road, there’s a Macy’s, a Dick’s Sporting Goods and a Target. Just over a mile east of Glenbrook Square, there’s also a Kroger. And less than a mile north up Coldwater Road, there’s an Aldi, too. There’s also a myriad dining options scattered around the corner, from Cebolla’s Mexican Grill next to the Target to Chick-fil-A and Olive Garden, off Coliseum. “The Glenbrook area has always been the place to go for shopping and dining in Fort Wayne. It’s where everyone goes because it’s got everything you need in one place,” says Roy.
