Greentree
Housing built between the 1940s and 1970s
The neighborhood’s scenic, walkable streets are populated with an attractive collection of established housing featuring private driveways, attached garages and ample yard space. Prices typically range from the mid-$100,000s to the high $200,000s. “You have homes built mostly in the 1960s and ‘70s -- a combination of ranch-style and two-story homes,” says Moor. “Comparatively, it’s a great place to buy. The homes hold their value.” Colonial Revival is the most common architectural style among the larger homes, while Cape-Cod style homes, built in the 1940s and ‘50s, offer a cozy alternative.Retail and dining center nearby
Nature gives way to commerce at Northwood Plaza, a Target-anchored shopping mall adjacent to the reserve that also includes a full-service Walgreens. Across Stellhorn Road is Maplewood Plaza, featuring a Big Lots. Dining options surround the stores. Prominent among them are Casa Grille Italiano, and Casa Grande, both of which serve up authentic ethnic specialties. A variety of chain-style eateries also is available for residents on the go, including Culver’s and Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken.Large public university enhances educational options
The neighborhood’s younger students can attend Harris Elementary, a school given a B-minus by Niche, and Lane Middle, a C-rated school. Older students can attend Snider High, a B-rated school known statewide for its sports teams and marching band. Also nearby is Purdue University Fort Wayne. The largest public university in northeast Indiana is a little more than a mile away along the St Joseph River. Many of the city’s top high school athletes go on to play sports there for the Mastodons.Stay active on natural and paved trails
For those seeking more of the natural landscape Greentree provides, Mengerson Nature Reserve offers a 1-mile hiking trail less than a mile away along Stellhorn Road, which bisects the neighborhood. The 47-acre tract was originally a family farm before northeast Fort Wayne was developed. A paved walking trail can be found at Brister Springs Park, a picturesque residential green space that also includes a playground and a small basketball court.Easy access in and out of the neighborhood
Bus stops dot Reed Road, the neighborhood’s single residential through street, providing convenient access to public transportation for work commutes and other travel throughout the city. Trier Road, which forms the neighborhood’s south side, connects directly to Coliseum Boulevard a little more than a mile west. Coliseum Boulevard provides an array of additional retail and dining options, and it is home to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, the city’s premier sports and entertainment venue. The boulevard connects directly to State Road 27 and Interstate 69, northeast Indiana’s primary north-south roadways. “Northeast Fort Wayne is a convenient area to live in,” says Moor.
