Hunting for affordable homes in Hazelwood
This small Fort Wayne neighborhood was established in the early 1950s, with winding streets featuring sidewalks on either side. Most homes were built between then and the 1960s, with newly mature trees towering over the one-story homes. Split-levels and ranch-styles are the most prevalent, with some exceptions. “People really like to talk about a good old bungalow or Cape Cod, but those are going to bring more of a premium price because of the character,” says Realtor Warren Barnes of North Eastern Group Realty. With rising price points across the city, Hazelwood remains within the more affordable options. The demand in Hazelwood is strong, with homes selling so fast they last fewer than five days on the market. “Residents enjoy higher valuations because they’re putting money back into their homes and taking care of them,” says Widmann. Buyers will find three-bedroom homes sell for between $130,000 and $230,000. Bungalows are fewer and farther between, selling around $200,000.A day at Lions Park or Lakeside Park
There are no parks directly in Fort Wayne, but there are several nearby. Lions Park serves as a neighborhood getaway, with baseball fields and basketball courts as just two of the sporty options. Kids can explore the Smart Playground, which was made especially for toddlers and their sensory, exploratory and physical development through playtime. Lakeside Park, about 2 miles away, serves as a crown jewel for residents of the ‘05 area. The extensive rose garden features more than 2,000 rose plants, and the pond makes for pleasant fishing and scenic picnics.Attending class in Hazelwood
Students can attend Brentwood Elementary, which gets a C-plus from Niche. They then move to C-rated Lakeside Middle. North Side High rounds out the list with a B-minus. High schoolers might join the award-winning marching band.Events
Recent decades have revealed a pollution issue in Fort Wayne. More than 20 companies were found responsible for releasing PFAs, or “forever chemicals,” into the environment. These harmful substances cost the city some $10,000 every year to test for. In response, the city of Fort Wayne filed a suit against these companies in July 2024. The drinking water, as reported by local news media, was and is not affected by the chemicals. There is also some risk of flooding in Hazelwood, since the community is about a mile from the St. Joseph River and one and a half miles away from the Maumee River. First Street rates the city’s overall risk factor as “moderate” regarding flooding.
