A Fort Wayne suburb by the highway

The minimalistic ranch-style and split-level homes of Hazelwood lie tucked in the arm of Coliseum Boulevard as it turns south toward east Fort Wayne, and beyond that, farmland. The community is also zoned within the ’05 ZIP code, which means that Purdue University Fort Wayne’s campus is 1 mile away. “A lot of younger people are attracted to the ‘05 district because it’s more affordable than surrounding areas, and it’s only a five-to-seven-minute drive to downtown,” says Realtor Rick Widmann of Century 21 Bradley Realty. Downtown Fort Wayne has the most to do, but Hazelwood residents have their selection of restaurants and local businesses too. “Many people who lived here growing up and are old enough to buy a house go right back to Hazelwood because they love the neighborhood,” says Widmann. Unsurprisingly, Hazelwood’s spot along the highway comes with some noise; or, as First Street would put it, an “active” sound score.

Hunting for affordable homes in Hazelwood

This small Fort Wayne neighborhood was established in the early 1950s, with winding streets featuring sidewalks on either side. Most homes were built between then and the 1960s, with newly mature trees towering over the one-story homes. Split-levels and ranch-styles are the most prevalent, with some exceptions. “People really like to talk about a good old bungalow or Cape Cod, but those are going to bring more of a premium price because of the character,” says Realtor Warren Barnes of North Eastern Group Realty. With rising price points across the city, Hazelwood remains within the more affordable options. The demand in Hazelwood is strong, with homes selling so fast they last fewer than five days on the market. “Residents enjoy higher valuations because they’re putting money back into their homes and taking care of them,” says Widmann. Buyers will find three-bedroom homes sell for between $130,000 and $230,000. Bungalows are fewer and farther between, selling around $200,000.

Events

Recent decades have revealed a pollution issue in Fort Wayne. More than 20 companies were found responsible for releasing PFAs, or “forever chemicals,” into the environment. These harmful substances cost the city some $10,000 every year to test for. In response, the city of Fort Wayne filed a suit against these companies in July 2024. The drinking water, as reported by local news media, was and is not affected by the chemicals.

There is also some risk of flooding in Hazelwood, since the community is about a mile from the St. Joseph River and one and a half miles away from the Maumee River. First Street rates the city’s overall risk factor as “moderate” regarding flooding.

Getting around Hazelwood and beyond

Coliseum Boulevard runs along the edge of the neighborhood, providing quick access to both north and east Fort Wayne. Buses make stops along the exterior of the neighborhood, on Hobson Road and Vance Avenue. Downtown is a 4-mile, 10-minute drive away, while the bus ride lasts about half an hour. Fort Wayne International Airport lies 12 miles southwest, making for a 25-minute drive.

Shopping and dining close to home

Hazelwood is largely residential, but there are plenty of shops and restaurants no more than three miles down Coliseum Boulevard. The Glenbrook Square shopping mall, anchored by Macy’s and JCPenney, offers dozens of popular retail stores and chain restaurants. Closer to home, residents can head to locally owned spots like Ryu’s Kitchen, which serves Korean-American fusion dishes, or Bangkok Bistro, known for authentic Thai cuisine. For groceries, residents can choose from options such as Kroger, Aldi and Fresh Thyme Market. Downtown Fort Wayne, about 4 miles away, offers residents plenty of entertainment, dining and shopping options. Local eateries and bars, buzzing nightlife, and a plethora of arts and culture activities await in the heart of the city.
