Foster Park offers outdoor opportunities close to home
Two parks border the neighborhood, connected by a walking trail. Indian Village Park, on the west side, is the smaller of the two. It has a picnic area and a playground with a swing set, a rock-climbing area and three slides. The park is a stop along the 24-mile Rivergreenway Trail, a winding hiking trail that leads to the larger Foster Park on the southeastern side of the neighborhood.
In 1912, Samuel and Col. David N. Foster donated Foster Park’s original 67 acres to Fort Wayne, and 151 acres have since been added. Foster Park includes pavilions, a dog park, playgrounds, community gardens, tennis courts and a 2-mile riverfront trail that’s locally known as “the loop.”
Also in the park is the Foster Park Golf Course, an 18-hole course that plays to a par 71. Currently, the city government is managing a construction project designed to improve the course’s flood resistance. “We’ve had issues with flooding in the past, but it’s still a rarity,” says Gary Whitacre, the course’s manager. “The construction is being managed by the city to control the floodwaters of the nearby river. The course is still open, and there are two other city courses also available.”
