New Glenwood
Spacious mid-century homes provide housing options
Large homes on spacious lots with private driveways fill the tree-lined streets. Most homes are Colonial Revival, split-level or ranch styles. “Comparatively, it’s a great place to buy. The homes were built mostly in the 1960s and ‘70s and hold their value,” Moor says. Prices typically range from the mid-$100,000s to the high $300,000s.Retail corridors nearby offer shopping, dining and nightlife
New Glenwood is close to shops and restaurants. Maplecrest Road, one of northeast Fort Wayne’s commercial corridors, is less than a mile east of the neighborhood and can be accessed from both its north and south sides. Northwood Plaza, anchored by a Target and the highly rated Casa Grille Italiano restaurant, is just north along the corridor, and Kroger and Dicky’s 21 Taps, a popular neighborhood bar and grill, are just south at the Georgetown retail centers.Students walk to public schools just east of the neighborhood
Students may attend Glenwood Park Elementary, graded B-minus by Niche. Lane Middle School was graded C and Snider High was graded B. The high school offers a project-based biomedical sciences program and is known for its successful athletics department. The elementary and high schools occupy adjacent campuses in neighboring Glenwood Park, across the street from the middle school. From the farthest point in New Glenwood, it's no more than a mile to the schools, and sidewalks lead the entire way.Hike, bike or stroll through nearby parks and trails
Brister Springs Park is in neighboring Walden. The picturesque residential park provides a playground, a basketball court and a paved walkway. Nearby, several ballfields host Georgetown Little League games. Mengerson Nature Reserve in neighboring Oakhurst features a 1-mile hiking trail through a wooded landscape.Thoroughfares make it easy to get downtown or cheer on the Komets
According to Moor, the convenience of living in New Glenwood extends to travel. “Locals have quick access to main roads that take them all around Fort Wayne,” he says. New Glenwood is around 6 miles from downtown Fort Wayne, and traveling between the two takes an average of 15 minutes.Trier Road and Vance Avenue, which form the neighborhood’s north and south sides, respectively, connect to Coliseum Boulevard, the city’s commercial corridor. It’s also the site of the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, the city’s premier entertainment venue. Home to the Fort Wayne Komets minor-league hockey team, the venue also hosts concerts and other large-scale shows. Less than 2 miles south of the neighborhood is Lake Avenue, which leads to the confluence of the city’s three rivers— St. Mary’s, St. Joseph and Maumee River— on the doorstep of downtown.
Community events are hosted by a local civic association
An active group of volunteers serve New Glenwood, planning and organizing community events. The New Glenwood Civic Association sponsors block parties, garage sales and community clean-ups throughout the year, and in the summer, they sponsor pool parties at Glen Aqua Pool, a private swim club in the neighborhood where residents get free entry for sponsored events.
