Small Cape Cods and cottages in North Highlands
Fort Wayne’s gridded streets give way to the bending boulevards in North Highlands. “All the streets are short and curvy as you meander through North Highlands,” Wahli says. The Fort Wayne suburb was built on a golf course that now serves as a grassy backdrop to the neighborhood's cozy cottages, Cape Cods, Tudor Revivals and American Foursquares. “One thing that makes North Highlands so popular is its smaller, simpler homes,” Wahli says, adding that the area is a less expensive alternative to neighborhoods closer to Downtown Fort Wayne. Homes often have two or three bedrooms and either a bathroom or a bathroom and a half, with an average size of 1,544 square feet. Homebuyers can generally expect to pay between $105,000 and $225,000. “That’s a great hot price point,” says Melissa Maddox, a Realtor and team lead of the Maddox Collective. “Anything under $250,000 sells really quickly.”A walkable neighborhood park
In the southeast corner of the neighborhood, Hamilton Park serves as one of the main recreational areas for residents of North Highlands. The park offers 16.5 acres of space for folks to reconnect with nature and stretch their legs. The park received significant improvements in 2000 after a redesign to serve as a water retention basin for the community. It now features three new baseball diamonds, upgraded playground equipment and a new paved trail around the park. “Little League, baseball and softball are huge — it’s always packed over there during baseball season,” says Mary Sherer, a broker at ERA Crossroads and team lead of the Hoosier Heartland Team. The trail is not your typical walking trail — it was built in partnership with the local school district and a local nonprofit and features interactive stations along the path that invite children to stop and engage with the art and activities. One lap around the outside loop is .55 miles, and a lap around the complete figure eight is .75 miles. Six pickleball courts have also been added adjacent to the tennis court.Schools in the neighborhood
North Highlands is served by the Fort Wayne Community School System, including Price Elementary School, graded C-plus by Niche and walkable from most of the neighborhood; Northwood Middle School, is graded C; and North Side High School is graded B-minus. North Side offers nine graduation pathways, such as Global Studies and Early College programs, and has a prospering fine arts program, including an award-winning marching band, show choir and dance team. Homeowners can also send their kids to the Queen of Angels Catholic School for preschool through eighth grades; the school is part of the Queen of Angels Catholic Church, which is just one of six churches in the neighborhood.A strong community spirit
North Highlands has an active community of homeowners. The neighborhood association plans a calendar of opportunities to get to know the neighbors, including garage sales and Fourth of July celebrations. A recent Paint Party pulled residents and volunteers to Hamilton Park for a weekend of beautifying the side of a pavilion with a mural and decorating crosswalks with art. “The neighborhood participated in a grant for painting the crosswalks to improve traffic safety,” Wahli said. “The efforts really strengthen the community and the neighborhood as a whole.”
Getting around the area
North Highlands is about a 2-mile trek to Fort Wayne’s vibrant downtown. Local buses make stops along Tyler Street, the western border of the neighborhood, for folks getting around on foot. When it’s time to get out of town, the Fort Wayne International Airport is approximately 10 miles away.Great bars and restaurants in the vicinity
Grocery and dining options are plentiful in the area. At the northeast corner of the neighborhood is a Kroger supermarket, about a 20-minute walk from the neighborhood's opposite corner. According to Wahli, nearby 3 Rivers Food Co-Op and Deli is a popular place for North Highlands residents looking for healthy, local options. Deer Park Irish Pub boasts more than 260 craft beers and serves a variety of comfort bar snacks alongside a warm atmosphere in its lodge-like establishment. Located near the University of St. Francis, the pub also has a bustling events calendar and is especially known as a community epicenter for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Another local favorite is the Green Frog Inn, according to Maddox, who likens it to the bar from “Cheers.” The Green Frog Inn and the Tower Bar and Grill have the best wings in town, she says, and there are a bunch more great little restaurants and cafes nearby along the historic Wells Street corridor, about a mile from the neighborhood's eastern edge. Ophelia’s, in particular, is a popular spot for brunch, with great food, great drinks and great vibes out on their string-lit patio. In the heart of Fort Wayne’s music scene
One of the highlights of this part of town, according to Maddox, is the proximity to live music every night of the week. The neighborhood is about a 10-minute drive from Sweetwater Sound, one of Fort Wayne’s major employers and a top-selling music gear supplier. Employees are often musicians themselves, Maddox says, and frequently perform locally, resulting in a lively music scene. “Every night of the week, we can catch live music here, but it’s spectacular and off-the-charts-good talent,” she says. For musicians, a visit to Sweetwater Sound is an all-day affair, according to Maddox, who is a musician herself. “You can go and play all the instruments and listen to music and rub elbows with some of the best of the industry.” Just two miles from home is the Foellinger Theatre at Franke Park, which brings in big names like Chicago and REO Speedwagon. A couple of miles south of the neighborhood is the Clyde Theater, which has The Club Room at the Clyde attached, where “you can have dinner and watch an incredible act,” says Maddox.
