Transitioning from rural to suburban
In Northwest Fort Wayne, miles from the urban landscape downtown, suburban sprawl meets the rolling cornfields beyond. But despite this area’s rural roots, what's mainly growing here today are not food crops, but new subdivisions sprouting along the neighborhood’s busy thoroughfares. “It’s got a country feel with the convenience of the city,” says Tina Bowen, a Realtor with American Dream Team Real Estate Brokers who has sold homes across the Fort Wayne area. “Everything’s along Lima Road, and you’re near Interstate 69, but it’s still right up against farmland.” Add in some of the top-rated schools in the area, and it’s no wonder why Northwest Fort Wayne is a popular pick for families.
Modern living outgrowing existing Craftsmans
Across the numerous subdivisions in Northwest Fort Wayne, most are planned communities with flat, winding streets lined by sidewalks and a few humble trees dotting the neat lawns. “All of Fort Wayne is expanding, so there’s a lot of new construction,” Bowen says. There are plenty of established homes, too, with builds ranging from the 1970s onward. While there is some variation in style, with the occasional Craftsman or Colonial Revival, most homes are contemporary constructions with wood or vinyl siding and stone accents framing a prominent two-car garage. A modest three-bedroom ranch-style house can sell for $170,000, whereas a four-bedroom home with over an acre to spread out on can cost as much as $700,000. On average, however, the median single-family home price is $265,000.

Communing with nature and wildlife
Farms are a dime a dozen on the more rural roads along the western edge of the neighborhood, though there’s only one worth knowing by name. Salomon Farm has been a working farm since 1871, but the historic homestead has since been turned into a public park. The scenic setting makes it a popular venue for weddings, but the farm is also host to a number of other activities, from a weekly farmers market to seasonal events like Christmas on the Farm. The Salomon Loop walkway connects to the Pufferbelly Trail, which features nearly 7 miles of paved paths. On hot days, kids can cool off at Buckner Park, which has a “sprayground” splash pad. Renovated in July 2023, the park also has a large pavilion and playground, so parents can keep an eye on the kids from the shade.

Fresh sushi and crafty martinis
Lima Road is the main shopping corridor, with big-box stores and local restaurants clustered along the thoroughfare. Residents can pick up groceries and other everyday needs from Meijer or the Walmart Supercenter. For specialty shops, Glenbrook Square shopping mall is located nearby and houses everything from department stores to boutiques. Across the area, the dining scene encompasses both fast-food chains and hip eateries. Black Canyon is a local favorite for a night out, serving New American dishes from its wood-fired grill and offering a long martini menu with a sleek atmosphere to match. Those with a taste for international fare might prefer Asakusa; the Japanese restaurant’s strip mall exterior might appear unassuming, but patrons swear by the sushi as some of the freshest in town.
