Oakhurst
Suburban Neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana
Allen County 46815, 46835
Midcentury homes reach for value
Quarter-acre lots face each other across narrow streets, displaying a collection of split-level homes with private driveways and attached garages. Mid-century ranch-style homes offer similar features. Cape Cods are rarer but add a little architectural charm and diversity. “I would say it’s a desirable place to live for first-time home buyers, maybe people that are downsizing,” says Realtor Andrea Gates of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. Homes typically sell between $190,000 and $315,000, with the high end most often indicating a few hundred extra square feet or a fifth bedroom. “Comparatively, that area is a great place to buy. The homes hold their value,” says Moor.Planning and preserving the greenery
While there are no traditional neighborhood parks in or around Oakhurst, residents have the Mengerson Nature Reserve at their disposal from dawn to dusk. This 47-acre tract lies inconspicuously on the north side, weaving through the woods for a mile-long hike. The reserve was originally a family farm before the development of northeast Fort Wayne. Nearby Brister Springs Park provides a more-active alternative. The developer-built green space is in neighboring Walden and offers a large playground, a basketball court, and paved paths for leisurely strolls in a picturesque residential setting. Also nearby are several ballfields where the Georgetown Little League plays.Top state athletics and extracurriculars
Students can attend Glenwood Park Elementary School, rated B-minus by Niche. They then move to Blackhawk Middle, which gets a B-minus. R Nelson Snider High rounds out the list with a B grade and is known statewide for its successful athletics programs and its marching band. The high school’s curriculum features a project-based biomedical sciences program.Flooding in Fort Wayne
Fort Wayne carries a “moderate risk” of floods, according to RiskFactor. To mitigate the effects of potential floods, the city has over 12 miles of flood control structures in place. An early warning system is also in place to keep tabs on the city’s three intersecting rivers. This is less of a concern for Oakhurst, which is 2 miles east of the St Joseph River.Bus routes to country roads
Stellhorn Road provides quick and easy access to more rural areas east of the neighborhood, as well as downtown to the west. Residents can drive down Stellhorn Road and be downtown in 16 minutes or board the bus for the 6-mile trip and make the commute in 40 minutes. The Citilink does not extend as far as Fort Wayne International Airport, but the 16-mile drive lasts 30 minutes.Sit-down restaurants alongside a grocery store
Oakhurst’s northeast corner touches the commercial intersection of Stellhorn Road and Maplecrest Road. Residents have a Target and a Walgreens for groceries and other needs. While there, they can stop by locally owned restaurants such as Casa Grille Italiano and Los Tacos Paco. Chain restaurants also appear, including Culver’s and Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken. Fitness buffs might sign up at the Planet Fitness across the street or relax on Fridays at Cocktails Lounge, the local bar.
