In a section of town notable for its residential communities, cul-de-sacs and links to nearby commercial crossroads, Oakhurst offers one thing just across a busy, divided street that many others don't: a nature preserve. “It’s a convenient area to live in,” says Realtor John Moor of Coldwell Banker Real Estate. “That general area is nice and secluded, but there’s a lot of shopping nearby, and you also have access to main roads that will take you all around Fort Wayne.” Once a farm, the Mengerson Nature Reserve provides not only a buffer between the neighborhood and one of the area’s primary retail and dining corridors, but also wooded pathways across its nearly 50 acres that make the typical urban surroundings disappear.

Midcentury homes reach for value
Quarter-acre lots face each other across narrow streets, displaying a collection of split-level homes with private driveways and attached garages. Mid-century ranch-style homes offer similar features. Cape Cods are rarer but add a little architectural charm and diversity. “I would say it’s a desirable place to live for first-time home buyers, maybe people that are downsizing,” says Realtor Andrea Gates of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. Homes typically sell between $190,000 and $315,000, with the high end most often indicating a few hundred extra square feet or a fifth bedroom. “Comparatively, that area is a great place to buy. The homes hold their value,” says Moor.

The developer-built green space is in neighboring Walden and offers a large playground, a basketball court, and paved paths for leisurely strolls in a picturesque residential setting.
