Suburban living close to farmland and Fort Wayne
The Park State East neighborhood feels like a secluded suburban enclave on the cusp of rural farmland. Located less than 10 miles from downtown Fort Wayne, this comfortable community of ranch-style and split-level homes presents affordable options for commuters and families. “It’s much closer to the more undeveloped areas, so it feels a lot more private. But you’re still close to the city, and they just built a new shopping center off Maysville Road,” says Edmond Jemison, a real estate broker with Proper Homes LLC, who has sold numerous homes in the area. Residents enjoy proximity to the 200-acre Kreager Park, which is home to an accessible playground for children of all abilities. Fort Wayne Community Schools are also nearby, as are all the events that take place throughout the year in downtown Fort Wayne. And with Interstate 469 just down the road, residents can easily commute to the area’s major employment centers.
Affordable, private homes in eastern Allen County
Ranch-style homes make up most of the housing stock in Park State East, although buyers will also find a few split levels in the mix. Prices range from $150,000 to $200,000, which is significantly lower than the city’s average home value of $230,000. But with many of these 1,500-square-foot homes built in the 1970s, Jemison says buyers appreciate “the affordability and the age of the home they’re getting for that price.” Large backyards leave room for small private pools or trampolines, while front yards often feature colorful shrubs that add a touch of character to the sidewalk-lined streets. The Savannah Springs senior apartment community is also an option for those looking to rent in a 55-plus community.
