Family-friendly living east of Fort Wayne

Statewood Park is a tiny, well-established neighborhood in east Fort Wayne. For homebuyers who crave a sense of privacy and a bit of nature, the community’s tree-shaded streets and larger-than-normal lots strike a chord. “You can drive at night and see a whole family of deer walking around,” says Realtor Tandalla Jackson of Top Notch Realty, LLC. Commuters enjoy easy highway access and a short drive to employers downtown. Throughout the year, neighbors celebrate holiday events, gather at Kreager Park, and attend classes at the Georgetown branch of the Allen County Public Library.

Large lots and relatively affordable homes

The community is three blocks from end to end. Homes are set farther back from the street than a more congested suburb might be, punctuated by neat lawns and private driveways that lead to front porches. A lack of sidewalks limits walkability, but the tree placement is such that visibility is high. Common architectural styles include petite Cape Cods with side-entry detached garages and traditional ranch-style homes with colorful exteriors. Despite their quarter-acre lots, homes tend toward the smaller side, averaging around 1,500 square feet. Homes are priced lower than those in nearby neighborhoods. “When it comes to square footage, this is the best bang for your buck,” says Broker Edmond Jemison of Century 21 Bradley Realty, Inc. Buyers will typically find homes priced between $140,000 and $185,000, less than the city’s average.

Heading outdoors near the Maumee River

Kreager Park attracts visitors from all over the Fort Wayne area. The park's 200 acres include ball fields, tennis courts, and playgrounds. The latter includes the state’s first wheelchair-accessible “boundless playground,” an inclusive recreational space for all differently abled youth. Residents might complete a circuit on the outdoor gym equipment on the weekend or host a picnic. Although the nearby Maumee River isn’t the best to swim in, the trail that runs parallel along its natural curvature is great for a day hike.
