A calmer neighborhood with expansive yards
Homebuyers who want to settle down close to Fort Wayne but still crave a bit of privacy are well-suited for the Summit Ridge neighborhood. “It’s common for individuals looking for more space to move to the northeast side of town. You’re still close to shops and eateries, but it’s more suburban,” says Broker Edmond Jemison of Proper Homes LLC. Summit Ridge also sits close to major employers such as Parkview Hospital Randallia, 3 miles west down State Boulevard. Further solitude isn’t far away, as local nature reserves and a trail along the Maumee River provide space to explore nature. And with local bus stops nearby, Summit Ridge serves as a commuter-friendly neighborhood.
Classic ranch-style homes are common
Fewer than half a dozen residential streets wind their way just north of State Boulevard, an east Fort Wayne thoroughfare. Narrow sidewalks accompany wide streets, crossing private driveways at nearly every property. In Summit Ridge, red brick and vinyl-sided ranch-style homes with attached single-car garages line the streets. “The lot sizes are pretty large, so buyers there are looking for more land as well as home,” says Realtor Tandalla Jackson of Top Notch Realty, LLC. Quarter-acre lots leave plenty of room for playsets and trampolines, while unfenced front yards invite creative landscaping. Averaging around 1,500 square feet, homes here tend to sell between $175,000 and $230,000, attracting many first-time homebuyers. “If you want the suburban feel, but you don’t want to spend $400,000, this is the best bet,” says Jemison. Summit Ridge Community Living offers affordable apartments, making the neighborhood accessible to renters as well.

Multiple ways to get outdoor exercise
Summit Ridge residents are close to multiple outdoor outlets. At Kreager Park, children of all abilities can enjoy the accessible Taylor’s Dream Boundless Playground, which includes wheelchair ramps, engaging sensory activities and a seasonal splash pad. The 200-acre park is also a destination for local baseball games, soccer games, tennis matches and picnics. About three miles north of the neighborhood lies the nearly 50-acre Mengerson Nature Reserve. Residents often come here to walk the natural trails, but after a big rain, the paved paths at Bristers Spring Park are far less muddy. Kids can also explore this smaller park’s playground.

Getting around eastern Fort Wayne
Residents can utilize the Citilink bus service to get around. A local bus stop at the corner of Karen Avenue and Reed Road offers a direct, 30-minute bus ride to Downtown Fort Wayne. Alternatively, residents can drive the four miles to work for a 12-minute commute. The Fort Wayne International Airport is south of the city, so that 14-mile drive would last nearly half an hour.
A recent suit over PFAs
The city of Fort Wayne filed a lawsuit in July 2024 against more than 20 different companies for their role in polluting the environment with PFAs, or “forever chemicals.” The suit seeks to compensate the city for some $10,000 paid each year in tests required by the EPA. However, the drinking water isn’t the issue; instead, the chemicals have found their way into the city’s wastewater for decades.
