Subdivisions right by the interstate
Sunnybrook Acres is a small Fort Wayne subdivision bordered by the St. Joseph River and major roads that connect to other parts of the city. "Sunnybrook Acres has smaller homes than some other subdivisions nearby, but homes are less expensive, and because it's right by I-469, it's so easy to get anywhere you want to go," says Realtor Jane Yoder of Re/Max Results. This combination of affordability and yards ranging from a quarter- to half-acre makes Sunnybrook Acres attractive to homebuyers, so much so that homes will sometimes sell within a few days of going on the market. Well-kept mid-century homes shaded by tall trees simply add to the appeal.
A variety of '50s and '60s homes
Neat, intersecting streets branch off St. Joe Road. Neighborbood streets lack sidewalks, but the front yards and driveways are spacious. Ranch-styles and split-levels from the 1950s and 1960s are common, with an occasional contemporary home from the last decade mixed in. "People are putting money back into these homes and increasing their value with remodels," says Yoder. Depending on the square footage, buyers will find that ranch-styles range in price between $90,000 and $215,000. Split-levels lean closer to the $240,000 or $260,000 mark. Those not in the market for a home can rent at the Wood Creek Apartments on the southeast corner.

Parks and golf courses along the river
Locals can often be found at the aptly named Riverbend Golf Course, which the St. Joseph River wraps around. A second golf course lies a quarter-mile south at Shoaff Park, where kids can explore the adjacent playground and splash pad. Shoaff Park also touches the St. Joseph River, where residents can walk the waterfront path. “It’s still within city limits, and you’re kind of close to the Rivergreenway trails,” says Realtor Warren Barnes of North Eastern Group Realty. Parkview North Family Park lies a few miles north, offering a modern playground for all abilities, paved trails, and an amphitheater for live shows.

Those in the mood for soul food make the mile and a half drive south to Shigs in Pit Barbecue, a locally owned staple. Driving the commute to downtown
Although Sunnybrook Acres is more on the outskirts of Fort Wayne, the 8-mile drive takes 18 minutes with good traffic. It is impractical to take the bus into downtown, because the closest stop is a mile outside the neighborhood, and even then, the ride lasts 40 minutes. The same is true for traveling short distances. Fort Wayne International Airport is 25 miles away.
PFA chemicals
For the past few decades, more than 20 businesses have introduced PFA pollutants into the environment, the city claims in a lawsuit. Although the drinking water is not contaminated, noticeable levels of these PFAs, or “forever chemicals,” were found in wastewater. To offset the $10,000 or so per year in costs for testing, the city filed a suit in July 2024 against the companies.
