Traditional homes with an attractive price tag
The excitement of Downtown Fort Wayne turns into a gentle hum in the community of Westfield. Just out of reach of the city, this humble Indiana neighborhood offers residents proximity to an abundance of recreation, parks and green spaces while maintaining a smaller price tag. Home values here are nearly five times less than the national average and half that of Downtown Fort Wayne. “Fort Wayne, in general, sits in a bubble. We don’t see huge dips and valleys or super highs. It’s a stable place for real estate," says Co-Owner and Realtor Heather Regan of Regan and Ferguson Group. A short drive in each direction brings locals to a river, multiple schools and a unique market that doubles as a food hall. “You’ve got the ‘07 zip code, and you’ve got historical homes,” says Realtor Tim Tower of Realtor Century 21 Bradley Realty, Inc. Older homes maintain a traditional architecture that draws buyers to their new homes along the river.

Entertainment along St Marys River and in Downtown
St. Marys River slices along Westfield’s east end. Locals stretch their legs and take in riverside views along the St. Marys Pathway, an eight-mile trail along the Rivergreenway. The trail connects Westfield to dog-friendly Tillman Park, known for its tennis center. The entire Rivergreenway trail extends 26 miles across the Fort Wayne area, offering a country environment within an urban setting. Running along the St. Marys, St. Joseph and Maumee rivers, the trail is perfect for biking, hiking or just a stroll. Study Park offers a small, shady refuge in the neighborhood’s center. Kids can also shoot some hoops on the park’s basketball courts. Swinney Park, just north of the neighborhood, is ideal for a game of disc golf or baseball on each of its dedicated fields. Downtown Fort Wayne offers unique attractions and entertainment venues like the TinCaps baseball games and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.

Modest bungalows and ranch styles populate Westfield
Most of Westfield’s housing is single-family homes, averaging 1,100 square feet, and was built between the 1920s and 1970s. Common home styles include bungalows and foursquares, often featuring Cape Cod and Craftsman-like accents. Front-gabled workman’s cottages and smaller ranch-style homes can also be found in abundance. Single-family homes in this neighborhood boast a median price of just $123,000, well below the national average. “Your dollar goes a lot farther in Fort Wayne than most places around the country,” says Regan. Two and three-bedroom bungalows and ranch styles fetch between $75,000 to $80,000, while larger contemporary foursquares sell from $150,000 to nearly $180,000.

Shopping and dining are a vibe at Electric Works' Union Street Market
A local favorite for dining is Double Down Sports Bar & Grille, which serves chicken wings in a friendly environment. For a wider variety of choices, folks head to Union Street Market in neighboring West Central. This eclectic indoor venue showcases local vendors’ regionally sourced plates, as well as fresh baked and sliced grocery items. “It’s close to what they call Electric Works, that’s definitely what’s dragging everybody down there,” says Tower. Stationed on the new Electric Works campus, this food hall is an open, warmly lit spot for pleasant weekend shopping. Commercial chains like Save A Lot and George’s International Market have all other grocery needs covered just outside the neighborhood.
