A Fort Wayne suburb with character
Williams-Woodland Park is one of Indiana’s smaller suburbs, encompassing just one-tenth of a square mile between two thoroughfares, Fairfield Avenue and Calhoun Street. A handful of trees more than two stories tall shade these narrowly gridded residential streets. Its lawns are neatly conjoined, with few fences in sight. “The main thing anyone needs to know about Williams-Woodland Park is that it’s a great historic pocket neighborhood with a distinct sense of community,” says Realtor Ben Wahli of 4th Street Real Estate. “Residents care a lot about their neighborhood, and they value connecting with folks and making you feel like you are part of something greater.” There’s nothing unique about the neighborhood’s streets and sidewalks; the design almost seems intentional. Passersby are instead drawn to the distinctive character of each home, be it the occasional brick columns, ornate roof design or Queen Anne-style spire.

Established homes with unique accents
In Williams-Woodland Park, quirky homes sit on larger lots framed with well-used sidewalks. The subdivision is a pioneering example of a planned residential neighborhood in Fort Wayne with an intact collection of historic architecture. Styles reflect those popular from the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, granting the district a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. “Historic homes are highly sought after in Fort Wayne,” says Wahli. “More and more people are moving in districts like Williams-Woodland Park because they’re looking to live in a quaint historic neighborhood.” Homes generally range in price between $130,000 and $300,000. “The homes aren’t just known for their amazing history,” explains Wahli. “They’re also known for their amazing front porches.” He notes that the district is a “front porch neighborhood” with a very active neighborhood association. The Williams-Woodland Park Neighborhood Association makes full use of the neighborhood’s beloved porches, which serve as a focal point for engaging events that bring residents together and help foster the welcoming sense of community for which Williams-Woodland Park is known. “In the summer, they host a Porch Fest with live music and a Porch Walk, where you can walk through different homes during the day,” Wahli says. “And in winter around Christmastime, they have a similar annual holiday home tour.”

Two parks offer walking paths and sports courts
Folks in Williams-Woodland Park have their pick of parks to get some fresh air. “Lutheran Park and Packard Park are within walking distance, and Weisser and Foster Parks are also popular for the area,” says Wahli. Each provides residents with a slice of nature to relax or stay active. Walk the snaking paths, bring the kids to the splash pad, enjoy the open green spaces or take a moment in the meditation garden at Lutheran Park, formerly the site of the Lutheran Hospital, which sits just west of the neighborhood. Formerly the Packard Piano and Organ Factory, the historic Packard Park features a softball diamond, playground, pavilion and Indiana’s first outdoor futsal courts on its 4.5 acres. “The area just received quite a bit of funding for the development and preservation of Packard Park,” Wahli says. Plans include improving the facilities and promoting recreational activities.

Local grocers and vendors convene at Union Street Market
For a taste of the community, visitors can check out local fare at one of the various restaurants. Bravas Burgers grills specialty hot dogs and hamburgers, Antonuccio’s Italian Market offers global delicacies and fresh groceries, and Friendly Fox serves hot lattes in a welcoming atmosphere. Wahli also recommends a house margarita at the aptly named La Margarita, a mom-and-pop Mexican shop. This is just the tip of the iceberg, however. In recent years, Fort Wayne has repurposed the old General Electric campus into a thriving center for coworking office spaces, local restaurant startups and grocery vendors. Locals love stopping into Union Street Market for these locally made meals and foodstuffs. “Union Street Market has brought a lot of revitalization to the area,” says Realtor Jennifer Harris-Steele of Century 21 Bradley Realty, Inc. “They’re still pulling new vendors in, and the city has a lot of money on the line.”
