South Side High School has a century-old claim to fame

Children in the area attend Harrison Hill Elementary School, which has an overall Niche grade of C. Next, kids attend Jeff High Towles Intermediate School, which has an overall Niche grade of C-plus. Teenagers attend South Side High School, which has an overall Niche grade of C-plus. Famously, it was the largest single-story building in the country when it opened its doors in 1922; it's since been renovated to include a second story.

After school, neighborhood kids flock to Kettler Park to play at its playground. The park is a beloved community gathering place that hosts many local events. Residents also enjoy riverfront bike rides along Saint Mary’s Pathway. The Allen County Public Library is nearby, a popular place to curl up with a novel on rainy days. Just northwest of Woodhurst is Foster Park, one of Fort Wayne’s Legacy Parks, which stretches across 255 acres. Framed by Saint Mary’s River, this slice of verdant heaven maintains stunning flower beds, a playground, two tennis courts and winding riverfront trails. The park’s three pavilions are the setting for community gatherings, and local golfers frequent the vast 18-hole Foster Park Golf Course. Local history enthusiasts can check out a replica of Abraham Lincoln’s birth cabin on the park’s grounds.

A public golf course, live music and an Italian grocer

Just a mile and a half away is the Donald Ross Golf Club, within walking distance for many. The public, nine-hole course is known for its lush natural scenery. Residents can eat at The Club Room at The Clyde and experience live music performances. Locals can put on performances of their own at Office Tavern’s karaoke night or watch their friends croon while they shoot pool. Folks gather to catch up over morning coffee at Sharing Peace Café or the nearby The Friendly Fox. The Friendly Fox lives by its tagline of “Coffee, Connections and Comfort.” Next door sits Antonuccio’s Italian Market, an authentic Italian and global specialty store rooted in tradition that offers an extensive selection of pasta, wines, meats, produce and cheeses. When locals need to grab regular groceries, there’s a Kroger Supermarket just a few minutes east of Woodhurst.
