Historic Masonic roots and new developments in suburban Fort Worth

Today, Masonic is an unassuming pocket of residential blocks just south of U.S. Route 287, but 20 years ago, it was bordered by the stately, historic buildings of the Masonic Home and School of Texas. The Freemasons facility closed in the mid-2000s, and the 200-acre campus has since been redeveloped into several crucial resources for a historically underserved section of southeast Fort Worth: the Renaissance Square commercial plaza, a modern YMCA branch, a charter school and a child and family services center. This flurry of construction has helped spur Masonic’s more localized overhaul, encouraging residents and investors to renovate or rebuild old-fashioned starter homes for modern families seeking to make a life within 5 miles of downtown Fort Worth. “It’s up-and-coming for sure. There’s a lot of new construction,” says Mariela Borjon, a Realtor with Su Kaza Realty who grew up in the area and has served the Fort Worth market since 2019. “You have generations staying there. My generation is the one bringing the area up, building their forever homes."

Midcentury starter homes and contemporary new construction

Masonic is almost exclusively residential, laid out in closely plotted suburban blocks lined by shady trees, spotty sidewalks and single-family homes fronted by driveways. Set behind small front yards and the occasional chain-link fence, many bungalows, Minimal Traditional and ranch-style homes were built in the 1930s through 1950s. Down the street from older homes needing significant renovation, new construction houses and properties flipped in the 2020s offer similar square footage with more modern design influence. Prices range from around $100,000 to $360,000.

Proximity to strip mall shopping and Michelin-recognized birria

The Renaissance Square commercial plaza is about a half mile from Masonic. Walmart anchors the development, as do retailers like Marshalls and Ross Dress for Less. Fast food chains like Raising Cane’s, Popeye’s and McDonald’s line Berry Street in front of the strip mall. Only a couple of miles from home, diners settle into the mural-splashed dining room of Birrieria y Taqueria Cortez, which became the first birria taco spot ever recognized by the Michelin Guide in 2024. “It's my husband's cousin's restaurant, their menudo is also really good. They have people come in from a lot of places,” Borjon says. A few small houses of worship hold services within Masonic. Just outside the neighborhood, larger congregations gather at Beth Eden Baptist Church and Jangchub Choeling Buddhist Dharma Center.
