White Lake Hills
Surrounded by nature and one of the largest urban parks
Much of the neighborhood is surrounded by green space, most of which is part of Gateway Park. This 791-acre city park, one of the largest urban parks in the country, offers six ballfields and five soccer fields. Three of the soccer fields are made of artificial turf, and the park also provides a disc golf course. The city opened its first off-leash dog park – Fort Woof Dog Park – in 2004 at Gateway Park. The 5-acre dog park is divided into separate areas for large and small dogs and has plenty of room for dogs to run around, as well as agility features. Action-sport lovers will enjoy the mountain bike trails at the park. These trails wind through the wilderness sections of the park and offer plenty of room to explore. Quanah Parker Park is also in the neighborhood, which sits along the banks of the Trinity River. With plenty of green space for a picnic by the water, the trail is the main appeal here. The trailhead here and those in Gateway Park are linked to the Trinity Trail System, a network of over 100 miles of biking and hiking trails that run through Fort Worth. Tandy Hills Natural Area is just over its southern boundary. Filled with wildflowers and hundreds of plants and animals, residents can stroll through here along its dirt trails for an escape into nature right inside the city. And boating and anglers wanting to get out on the water are only an 8-mile drive to the 50-acre Lake Arlington.Midcentury moderns with city skyline and lake views
The quiet tree-lined streets give way to ranch-style homes, with a few two-story homes sprinkled in. The housing landscape offers a mix of midcentury modern designs and brick homes. Most homes were built in the early 1960s and range from $250,000 to $450,000. “Houses are typically more affordable here than other parts of Fort Worth,” Conley says. Newcomers can expect 1,700-square-foot three-bedroom homes to five-bedroom homes spanning over 4,000 square feet. Most White Lake Hills homes have great views of the downtown skyline, multi-car garages and ultimate privacy and tranquility with the surrounding greenbelt. Homes on the higher end have pools and large yards for entertaining on nearly a half-acre. Residents can easily walk to local trailheads, any of the three parks in the neighborhood and two private schools.Championship-winning high school
Fort Worth Independent School District serves the area, and local students attend Eastern Hills Elementary in the Eastern Hills neighborhood, followed by Riverside Middle and Amon Carter-Riverside High School, both in the Carter-Riverside community. The elementary school, which offers a summer basketball camp, earned a C on Niche, and the middle school earned a C-minus. Earning a C-plus on Niche, the high school provides cross-country teams and a mariachi club. Despite average ratings on Niche, Conley says the schools here are part of the appeal for families moving to the area. “The local schools in the area are great, and there are a lot of options,” she says. Students can also attend the private Nolan Catholic High School in the neighborhood. This school has been serving the community since 1961 and is one of the state's highest-rated private college preparatory schools. Nolan is known for its athletic teams, having won 26 state championships throughout its history, seven of which came from football.A variety of beloved mom and pops
Most shopping and dining options are clustered in the southwest part of the neighborhood and off Interstate 30. Lisa’s Chicken is a no-frills local favorite known for its fried chicken, chicken fried steak, gumbo and fried okra. At the more modern Turkey Den, residents can catch live music while enjoying Cajun classics like dirty rice, fried alligator and crab boils. For Texas natives or barbecue lovers moving to the area, Sammie’s Bar-B-Q is near the neighborhood. A no-frills smokehouse serving up pork ribs, chopped brisket and smoked bologna by the pound, locals also love the joint’s potato salad and onion rings. Groceries and other essentials are just a 3-mile drive east along State Loop 820, where residents will find Alberton’s, Home Depot and Family Dollar. More shopping opportunities await at Sundance Square, just a 5-mile drive west from the neighborhood.A neighborhood association uniting the community
Community is big here, with neighbors coming together for over 30 events throughout the year, including a New Year’s 5K, a holiday yard decorating contest and an annual parade. The White Lake Hills Neighborhood Association is at the helm of many celebrations to unite the community. The association also holds an Easter egg hunt at Smith-Wilemon Park, “Cowtown Cleanup” park beautification meetups and a Fourth of July celebration.Five miles from Downtown Fort Worth
With Interstate 30 running along its southern boundary and Route 121 just north, residents can quickly get around the area. Interstate 30 gets residents to Downtown Fort Worth in 5 miles and the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 18 miles. Public transportation is convenient via Trinity Metro, with plenty of bus stops along Bridge Street.
