Northwest Fox Lake sits halfway between Spring Grove and the western shores of Grass Lake, not far from the Wisconsin state line. Life in the “Heart of the Chain O’Lakes” often orients around surrounding parks and boating opportunities. “The great thing about this area is the state and local parks,” says Theresa Hahl, office coordinator at Chain O’Lakes State Park. “Lake County as a whole has a lot of land and open space. I’ve lived here my entire life. We’re lucky to enjoy the natural beauty for free, it’s a great benefit to living here.” Located an hour north of Chicago, Northwest Fox Lake is almost entirely residential, with a CAP Index crime score of 2, compared to the national average of 4. Still, residents live within 7 miles of locally owned shops, regional festivities and amenities.

From Sundial Farms to Country Club Hills
Sundial Farms is a modern subdivision off Wilmot Road, lined with new traditional homes constructed between the 1990s and early 2000s, some of which are built on spacious lots overlooking wheat fields, local pastures and grazing horses. Prices vary between $525,000 and $700,000, while undeveloped lots of an acre or less range between $50,000 and $150,000.
South of Main Street Road, many ranch-style homes and split levels date back to the midcentury. Boats, canoes and personal watercraft are prevalent on lawns, along with old-growth trees. Alternatively, subdivisions branching off State Park Road have a more suburban feel with less space between homes. This is especially true of Country Club Hills, a townhome development across the street from Fox Lake Country Club. Altogether, single-family homes range between $150,000 and $350,000, while townhome units average about $260,000.

Living next door to Chain O’Lakes State Park
Just east of the neighborhood, Chain O’Lakes State Park is a 2,800-acre preserve with campgrounds, trails and a central lake. “People love walking the trails by the Fox River,” Hahl says regarding the 2-mile Gold Finch Trail. The spur is one of many veering off the Chain O’Lakes State Park trail. “We also have trailer and motorcoach parking for those riding the equestrian trails.” Additional paths lead to the Catfish Cove Fishing Pier on the Fox River. From there, guests can rent boats and head to Grass Lake, Fox Lake or Lake Marie. Blarney Island’s Caribbean party bar is located less than a mile offshore, with docks for boat or a $20 boat shuttle. Back on land, the Fox Lake Country Club offers an 18-hole course connected with the Country Club Hills subdivision. The 106-acre facility is open to the public.

Guests raise funds for the Special Olympics each year at the Polar Plunge and return in the summer for a Friday night concert series. The Lakefront Park Farmer’s Market overlaps, highlighting local farmers and vendors selling candles, ceramics and fresh poultry.
