The Milwaukee neighborhood of Fox Point is one of the region’s oldest neighborhoods, literally. Effigy Moundbuilder culture occupied the area around 500 B.C.; in the sixth century, the Hopewell Native American culture made the region their home. A lot has changed since those years — presently, Fox Point has the characteristics of a sleepy enclave. “It’s a bedroom community with lots of trees and nature,” explains Beth Jaworski, a Realtor with over 30 years of experience selling homes in Milwaukee. The Village of Fox Point is the epicenter of the community. Positioned on Milwaukee County’s North Shore, Fox Point is bordered on the east by Lake Michigan.

Maple Dale Elementary School is the neighborhood’s elementary and middle school. The student-teacher ratio at the Niche-A-plus-rated school is 10-to-1. With a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1, Nicolet High School earns an A from Niche. Milwaukee Jewish Day School, an elementary and middle school, has a low enrollment, making class sizes manageable for teachers, parents and students.

Like most neighborhoods with lakefront properties, Fox Point’s housing prices vary. “What is on Lake Michigan is going to price higher,” Jaworski says. The median listing home price is $500,000 and the range is between $300,000 to $5.9 million. According to Jaworski, many homes are mid-century ranch houses with decent-sized lots. Fox Point is a community with tree-lined streets, wooded areas and magnificent Lake Michigan vistas. Additional amenities include the outdoor Longacre Pavilion and Ice Rink for residents’ use. And the neighborhood has several well-established clubs. The Fox Point Garden Club, active since 1950, isn’t just a club that discusses the fine art of gardening — the club strives to promote education and interest in birds and wildflower conservation. From June to October, the Fox Point Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 8 am to noon. The market features farm-to-table fruit, vegetables and flowers. The market is located on North Santa Monica Boulevard. The Fox Point Foundation, established in 1976, is a non-profit organization that holds free events to unite the community.

Residents year-round enjoy all that Lake Michigan has to offer, whether sunbathing, enjoying the water or casting out a fishing line. People who enjoy hiking and birdwatching flock to Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, which, besides being a place to observe birds and raptors, also features 6 miles of trails and a 60-foot observation tower. Each year, the 185-acre park holds its Xtreme Raptor Day, an interactive way to observe the birds of prey up close. Doctors Park is a lakeshore park in Fox Point that attracts families, hikers and dog walkers. The Town Club is a private members-only club with a pool, tennis courts and pickleball.

Featuring more than 60 shops, Bayshore, open since 1954, is not just a shopping destination. The open-air mall also includes an interactive Art Walk, featuring the works of some of Milwaukee’s brightest and most talented artists. Friendship Cafe & Bakery is the local spot to get that morning jolt of coffee and fresh baked goods. Calderone Club is the neighborhood’s home for pizzas and Italian comfort food. Located 10 miles and 20 minutes from Milwaukee, residents are never too far from city life.
