Expansive West Franklin welcomes new housing growth and recreation

West Franklin is a neighborhood that lives up to its name, as it encompasses the western side of the city of Franklin. It has several subdivisions, including established communities from the mid-20th century and 21st-century developments that continue to expand. The expansive landscape also has many shopping, dining and recreation options. Although the area is large, residents are never more than a few miles from downtown Franklin and citywide events. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Mid-20th-century homes meet the new, walkable Westhaven community

West Franklin includes a collection of subdivisions, the newest and largest being Westhaven. Construction began around 2000, and additions continue even after 25 years of development. The subdivision offers American Foursquares, two-story homes with Tudor and colonial architectural influences, townhouses and a 55-and-older community with exclusive amenities. The subdivision's key characteristics are lush, tree-lined streets and abundant walking paths, including sidewalks and trails. "The walkability in this neighborhood is unlike any other community that you will find in Franklin," says Sara Lavagnino, principal broker at Westhaven Realty, who has sold in the community. Other West Franklin communities typically have a blend of new construction and homes from the 1960s through the 1980s. These can be ranch-style houses, bungalows, two-story New Traditionals and Craftsman-style homes. Sidewalks are uncommon, but lawns are still grassy and tree-lined. Single-family home prices range widely, from $335,000 to $1.7 million, depending on age, size and condition. Westhaven pricing stays in the $790,000 to $3 million range. Homes have sold as high as $4.5 million. Most condos and townhouses sell from $300,000 to about $1 million, depending on age and location.

Zoning varies, but many kids attend Pearre Creek and Hillsboro schools

The neighborhood is large, so school zoning can vary significantly depending on where students live. Most students may attend Pearre Creek Elementary, which has an A score from Niche. They can mod Hillsboro School — a kindergarten through eighth-grade campus — for their middle school years, followed by Independence High. Both schools also have A ratings. The state also offers open enrollment across its districts, so families have flexibility in choosing Williamson County or Franklin Special School District schools.

Parks range from playgrounds to sports fields and private golf clubs

Jim Warren Park and the Williamson County Soccer Outdoor Complex are a hub for outdoor athletics, offering over three dozen fields for soccer, baseball, softball and football, as well as tennis courts. Del Rio is a small neighborhood park with a playground and a covered pavilion. "Wherever you live, there is a park within walking distance of your home," Lavagnino says about Westhaven, adding that the community has significant green space designated for parks and playgrounds. There are several trailheads onto the Westhaven trail system and the member-only Westhaven Golf Club. A variety of other parks are just outside West Franklin's boundaries, including Franklin Recreation Complex and The Park at Harlindsdale Farm.

Local shops and eateries line Front Street and Westhaven Boulevard

An eclectic retail hub filled with boutiques and local eateries lines Front Street. High Brow Coffee brews warm drinks, while Scout's Pub serves southern comfort fare on its relaxed outdoor patio. Nearby on Westhaven Boulevard, people can rent kayaks from Paddle Dog, cruise around Mattox Lake then head back to the restaurant for hot dogs and beer. Across the street, Sweethaven has a rotating menu of specialty ice cream flavors. Grocery options around the retail center include Kroger and Westhaven Farmers Market, which is open every Wednesday evening from May to October. More commercial options are available along Hillsboro Road, Del Rio Pike and in downtown Franklin, which most residents can reach in under 5 miles.

Community celebrations include Porchfest and downtown events

Most events, such as Dickens of a Christmas and Pumpkinfest, are held outside the neighborhood in downtown Franklin or along Main Street. Westhaven hosts a variety of subdivision-specific events, including cocktail hours and the annual Porchfest. "We map out certain streets, and bands play on people's front porches," Lavagnino says. "You can literally drive your golf cart to all these different houses with bands, and some people will have barbecue that's smoking outside the porch." The festival ends with a large, ticketed concert on Front Street.

Most residents drive with easy highway access to Nashville

Public transit is limited. However, a few Franklin Transit bus stops are along Hillsboro Road and West Main Street. Golf carts are allowed in the Westhaven community, but most West Franklin residents drive cars. Highway 96 offers a straight shot into downtown, while Mack Hatcher Memorial Parkway connects with Interstate 65, leading to Nashville and the Nashville International Airport, roughly 25 miles away. Residents are about 6 miles from Williamson Medical Center and Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital Vanderbilt.
