Small borough tucked beside the Lehigh River
Once a booming canal town, Freemansburg is now a residential borough with sidewalk-lined streets, community green spaces and local businesses along the banks of the Lehigh River. “This is a quaint, small town where everyone knows each other and is willing to help each other out,” says Jonathan Itterly, the Borough Manager of Freemansburg. “We’re also going through some interesting projects right now. We’re building a community amphitheater to host music shows and movie nights, and we have funding for a community center in Gerald C. Yob Community Park.” The borough is just east of downtown Bethlehem and located in the heart of the Lehigh Valley, with convenient commutes on the nearby Interstate 78.

It’s also a very popular spot for fishing. The canal is stocked with trout every year, which draws quite a crowd,” Itterly says. Middletown is a neighborhood east of Allentown and Bethlehem, conveniently located just north of the Lehigh River. “It’s a great commuter location; it’s right off the interstate,” says John Keely, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Real Estate-West End who has been in real estate since 2000. “It’s a suburb of Allentown, and it’s where everyone seems to end up living.” The area is mainly residential but has a few locally owned restaurants as well as some chain businesses. Middletown receives a 2 crime score from the CAP Index, lower than the national average of 4.
The area is mostly plotted out with parallel streets and homes built in the 50s, 60s and 70s. The roads follow the hills, and some streets will have sidewalks on them, typically around newer construction. Mature trees fill the older streets, sometimes acting as natural fences between neighbors. Newer construction areas may have a few mature trees, but the property is likely to have less trees and foliage for an open look on the property. Some homes may come with backyard fences and pools. “I would say it’s probably 50% multi-family buildings,” Keely says. Prices for townhomes range between $220,000 and $520,000. Bi-level, ranch, Colonial Revival and Cape Cod homes begin around $200,000 and can reach about $470,000. Traditional homes range from $450,000 to $620,000.
Along Easton Avenue, a GIANT for groceries shares parking space with Dave’s Home Furnishing. Vic’s Bagels, open until 2 p.m., sells breakfast sandwiches and egg platters in addition to bagels and homemade cream cheeses. Along Freemansburg Avenue, Geaker’s Tacos is an outdoor seating-only restaurant. Kingfish American Bistro & Wine Bar has weekly specials for seafood, including a “Create Your Own Seafood Combo.”
Throughout the summer in Bethlehem, Volleyball Nights at Fairview Park occur on Wednesdays, while the Music in the Parks concert series usually occurs on the weekends and features local artists. “You’re close to all local towns and municipalities,” Keely says. Bethlehem also has 2024 Movies in the Park, showing animated films, where the only thing to bring is a blanket or chair to enjoy the films.
The Bethlehem Area School District covers the neighborhood. Depending on where students live, they may begin at Governor Wolf Elementary, which earns an A-minus from Niche. Other elementary school options include Farmersville, with a B-minus, and Miller Heights, with an A-minus. East Mills Middle School and Freedom High receive a B from Niche. At Freedom High, students can take Advanced Placement courses.
Behind the Bethlehem Area Public Library—Coolidge Branch, Comer Park has room for children to run through the grassy field or play on the playground. 14th Street Park, aptly named for its location, is a horizontal strip of park only about 90 feet wide with a tennis court, parking lot, street hockey rink and a multipurpose/half basketball court lined up in the space. With a walking trail surrounding it, Birchwood Park has a butterfly garden alongside more traditional park offerings like a playground and a half-basketball court.
The Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority operates three buses through the area. Two of them begin in Bethlehem with one crossing the overall Allentown area; both towns are to the west of the neighborhood. “Middletown has a really great traffic flow,” Keely says. Route 22 and Route 33 are about 2 miles to the north and east, respectively.
