Small town, close community
With a population of less than 200 people, DeSoto Parish County’s Frierson is a small, rural community on the northwest corner of Louisiana where most residents know each other on a first-name basis. “We’re a very close-knit community, neighbors here are like family” says Carol Lamb, owner of Bits Country Store, a local business. “There’s some major construction underway, so the community is growing. Us small business owners are super excited about the growth. It means new customers and new opportunities for us.” While some residents might commute into busier cities like Shreveport, which is 23 miles north of Frierson, many live and work locally.
Start fresh on empty lots
Frierson offers plenty of vacant lots, allowing buyers to customize their living space from the ground up. In recent years, subdivisions filled with single-story ranch-style and traditional homes are being constructed in the area, but most older homes have stood in this community since the 1950s and beyond. There are no homeowners' association fees to contend with, so residents have free range over their property. From affordable grassy lots to newly built, high-end homes, prices can vary from $250,000 to $700,000.

Launch boats at the Milton James Cameron Park
While not technically within Frierson’s bounds, Milton James Cameron Memorial Park is a lakeside one-acre park with a boat ramp, parking area and picnic tables. The park is ideal for launching boats, but Frierson residents are free to let their dogs roam freely at the park, go on serene nature walks and just take in the natural beauty of the wooded area. The park is about 18 minutes outside of Frierson.
Try local favorites on Highway 175
A short 4-minute drive outside of Frierson on Highway 175 is Shank Cat’s, a family-owned barbecue spot ran out of a weathered, hole-in-the-wall shack that was once a small schoolhouse. Locals rave about Shank Cat’s fall-off-the-bone ribs, friendly staff and reasonable prices. More fast-casual Southern food options can be found at the Relay Station (also on Highway 175), a Western-themed truck stop that’s complete with a casino and general store. Relay serves up Cajun classics like boudin, crawfish and red beans and rice in a grab-and-go setting so truckers and travelers can grab a hearty Louisiana meal for the road. For grocery needs, residents can stock up on bargain goods at Dollar General.
