Living in Galliano

Surrounded by marshlands, Galliano is an out-of-the-way community in Louisiana's Bayou Region. Much of the area is farmland, and the Bayou Lafourche flows north to south through the region. "I love Galliano! I was born and raised here. It's a very nice, quiet community," says Melissa Killian, a Galliano native and Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Bayou Partners. "This is a great community, depending on your personality type. If you're a people person, you would like this place. Everybody knows each other, and when you have hardships, the community really steps in."

Buying into a community-minded area

Most residences in Galliano are 20th-century ranch-style homes and houses with Acadian influences. Properties don't sell here often, but most recent listing prices range between $100,000 to $300,000. The region is at risk of coastal flooding, hurricanes and tropical storms, which can result in property damage. "People really love this community. But we also have insurance to bear with," Killian says. "Right now, flood insurance and homeowners insurance are high, which affects our buyers and sellers." But Galliano and nearby communities have a strong sense of local pride after natural disasters. "When we had Hurricane Ida, everyone lost a lot," Killian says. "But we all stepped up and helped each other out. It's very family oriented. People help everybody here."

Visiting Cut Off Youth Center and Tidelands Golf and Country Club

Cut Off Youth Center, about 3 miles from Galliano, has an outdoor pool and an indoor gym. The center also hosts private and public events throughout the year. "The Cut Off Youth Center has a Hurricane Festival that's popular," Killian says. To the east is Tidelands Golf and Country Club. "It's located behind the high school. It's a beautiful area. They have a nice little country club, and people go golfing there," Killian says. "One of my friends rented it and had a class reunion there, it was really pretty."

Shopping and Southern comfort food

The community has grocery options like Galliano Fresh Market and Walmart Supercenter. Restaurants often favor Cajun-style and southern cuisine. Spar's at the Station and Me-Maw's Cajun Cuisine are popular favorites inside the neighborhood. However, locals frequently travel between Larose and Galliano for more dining options.

Events in surrounding communities

Galliano residents can stay busy throughout the year with events in surrounding communities. "Fishing is a big thing in our area, and we have a lot of fishing rodeos," Killian says. "From April to July, you'll have one in the area almost every weekend." She says the Yankee Canal Rodeo and the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo attract large crowds. "In Larose, we have a French Food Festival, which is every October. That's a big festival that brings people everywhere. We have local food booths that'll give you some great Cajun cooking," Killian says.

Staying close to home to attend school

Families are zoned for Galliano Elementary, which has an A-minus grade on Niche. Golden Meadow Middle receives a B-plus and South Lafourche High has a B. The school's athletic department offers tennis, baseball, softball and powerlifting.

Getting in and out of Cajun Country

Locals commute along Main Street, also known as Highway 1, and Highway 3235. "The roads of Galliano, Cut Off and Golden Meadows all gel together with the school system, events and everything. It's all connected," Killian says. The neighborhood is 30 miles away from U.S. Highway 90, which leads to major Louisiana cities like New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
