Cologne has homes tucked away in the trees and just a drive away to the beach.
Quiet neighborhood insulated from tourist traffic
Passing through Cologne on White Horse Pike, Atlantic City tourists fly by stands of coastal conifers and a sleepy commercial district. Insulated from the four-lane freeway by parking lots and forests, long-established suburban blocks and the newer, fairway-fringed subdivisions of a golf course community enjoy the seclusion of rural backroads on the edge of Galloway Township as well as easy highway access to the South Shore. “Instead of looking at the ocean, I have views of the fairways. We’re a very active community – it's rare that you see more people running for board positions than there are seats, but that happens here,” says Michael Murphy, a broker with RE/MAX Access who lives in The Village of Blue Heron Pines. Whether choosing to take part in event planning and highway cleanup committees or opting out of an HOA altogether, Cologne’s residents all enjoy a straight shot to the South Shore as well as the more distant city life in Philadelphia.

Recreation at Blue Heron Pines
Blue Heron Pines golf memberships are separate from HOA membership and allow residents and guests to pick packages depending on age and how often they plan to tee-off for 18-hole games on the club’s pine-trimmed fairways. Groups and singles living outside the community can also purchase memberships and one-off daytime or twilight passes. Several of New Jersey’s South Shore beaches are less than a 15-mile drive away. “Proximity to the shore is of course the main thing, but people go to different beaches. I don’t like fighting the traffic in Atlantic City, but their beaches are free. Ventnor and Margate have fee beaches. It’s all up to personal preference,” Murphy says. All along Absecon Island’s coastal towns, cyclists can explore miles of boardwalk running parallel to the dunes.

Blocks of single-family homes and The Village of Blue Heron Pines
A medley of single-family home styles line quiet, suburban blocks north of White Horse Pike, ranging from simple prewar vernacular homes like Cape Cods and bungalows to ranch-style homes and split-levels built in the midcentury and later. Prices range from $200,000 to $450,000 depending on square footage and renovation needs. South of White Horse Pike, The Village of Blue Heron Pines weaves between the fairways, tree lines and sand traps of its central 18-hole golf course. “Instead of me collecting seashells, my dog sniffs out golf balls,” Murphy says. "One might hit my house in a day – there’s always a lot of them around the lake. He gets a real treat when he finds one of the more expensive ones." New Traditional Craftsman-inspired single-family homes are set along manicured, sidewalk-lined streets and range from $315,000 to $500,000 depending on renovation levels and floorplan. Monthly HOA fees of $138 cover front yard maintenance and access to a community fitness center and swimming pool.
Events throughout the year
The Recreation Committee at Blue Heron Pines is busy scheduling events throughout the year, arranging potlucks to bookend the community pool’s season in May and September and a holiday party each December to usher in the winter months. Outside of Blue Heron Pines, Kaenzig Tree Farm is a pine-scented centerpiece for many locals’ wintertime traditions, opening up tree tagging in early November and inviting patrons to cut their own Christmas trees and snag decorative wreaths each weekend until the fields are picked over.
Shopping and dining along White Horse Pike
While some stretches of White Horse Pike are dense with national chains and strip malls, the center of Cologne’s tiny commercial district is a Wawa. Bulldogs Bar & Grill serves tavern fare with a twist – the doghouse outside the entrance clues diners into the fact that many of their meals will be served in dog bowls. Those seeking diner ambiance grab breakfast at Gilchrist Offshore Restaurant across the street, a beloved Atlantic City chain known for its blueberry pancakes. Big box names like Target and Walmart pop up between retailers like HomeGoods and Gabe's 5 miles away in the strip malls surrounding Hamilton Mall.
