A quiet suburb growing in popularity
“It’s definitely a place for those who want to be a little further out,” says Heather Smith, a Realtor who has lived in Columbus for 20 years. She and Hamrick share similar memories of Galloway Ridge’s most important landmark back in the day: “I remember 20 years ago, this area was just a Tractor Supply.” Today, the lots here are large, and the homes are all fairly new – the oldest ones were built in the ‘90s, but most came on the scene in the 2000s. More developed areas have long sidewalks, but those shift to wide, sidewalk-less streets near the rural edges of the neighborhood. Foursquares with add-ons and large New Traditional homes are common in the $400,000 range, though there are plenty of ranch-style homes for closer to $200,000. Condos line the eastern portion of the neighborhood; each development features its own community center and a lake or pond. Sitting at the border between suburban developments and Ohio’s swathes of green and yellow farmland, the neighborhood has no shortage of places to explore outdoors. Galloway Ridge Park and Cypress Park are two convenient spots to walk around looping paths and playset kids loose on the playgrounds and fields. Galloway Ridge Park is the smaller of the two, but it’s a local staple. “I basically grew up playing there. It’s a nice park right in the middle of the neighborhood,” says Hamrick. On the edge of the neighborhood is Cypress Park, across from the Cypress Church, where residents can enjoy well-maintained soccer fields, a baseball field and a playground. To the south of the neighborhood, along West Broad Street, is the Prairie Township Community Center, where locals can enjoy the indoor track, pools, fitness center and some small gathering rooms.Classic coneys on West Broad Street
West Broad Street runs along Galloway Ridge’s southern border and hosts popular fast-food chains like Wendy’s and Raising Cane’s. The street also features restaurants like Asian Buffet and Tony’s Coney’s, a well-loved hot dog restaurant in the neighborhood. Locals can head to Kroger for groceries or browse through Strader’s Garden Center for all their outdoor project needs. Volunteers of America Thrift Store offers a wide selection of clothing and furniture for thriftier residents. But among all the new shops, the classics still hold their own. Smith recalls, “I was touring for one of my clients with my son down there a few weeks ago and my son goes ‘There's a Tractor Supply down here?’”A neighborhood built around Westland High School
Prairie Norton Elementary School, rated C-plus on Niche, focuses on reading with a program called One School One Book, where parents and students read together weekly. C-rated Galloway Ridge Intermediate School teaches fifth and sixth graders and has a music program with five instructors. Norton Middle School, also rated C, features a book club, a branch of Girls on the Run called Heart & Sole and a student council. The C-plus-rated Westland High School offers a music department, a literary magazine and plenty of student-run organizations.Just 10 miles from downtown Columbus
West Broad Street serves as the neighborhood’s main road going into Columbus or out toward Galloway. Interstate 270 also connects Galloway Ridge to the rest of the surrounding Columbus neighborhoods and provides access to interstates 70 and 71. The 10-mile drive downtown can take from 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic.
