The waterside lifestyle of Lake Madeline
Lined with brightly painted homes and bordered by the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the Lake Madeline neighborhood on Galveston Island offers its residents a waterfront lifestyle. Interstate 45, less than 3 miles from the neighborhood, provides a 50-mile direct route to downtown Houston. Some people visit just for a weekend, but for many, living here is a choice for a slower-paced way of life. “There’s something about the pull of the water," says Martye Hill, an island resident of 17 years and a Realtor with EXP Realty. "Galveston is a huge tourism destination, but we live where people vacation. Lake Madeline is so much more affordable than a lot of other areas on the Gulf. That goes for Galveston as a whole. People move here to be on island time and out of the city hustle.”

Playing at Schlitterbahn Water Park
The real draw for most residents of Lake Madeline is the neighborhood’s proximity to water. “You can’t beat the location if you like the water,” says Jeanmarie Veyssi of Zapp Realty, who’s been selling homes in Galveston for over 15 years. “You’re no more than a few blocks from the beach anywhere in the neighborhood.” Whether biking along the seawall, lounging on the beach or chasing redfish in the Gulf, many recreational activities in Lake Madeline are tied to the water. Babe’s Beach is just over the seawall on the neighborhood’s southern border, about a five-minute walk from the Galveston and 61st Street fishing piers. Schlitterbahn Water Park, less than five minutes away by car, has attractions ranging from the Wave Lagoon to the “uphill” water coaster Dragon Blaster. Just west of the neighborhood, Schreiber Park on 81st Street features multiple baseball diamonds, a playground, a splash pad, a walking trail and a dog park.

Midcentury ranch homes and Gulf-facing condos
Many properties in the neighborhood are ranch-style homes, but there are pops of architectural variety, from midcentury modern to Mediterranean-inspired houses. Condominium buildings line the waterfront road of Seawall Boulevard, offering residents views of the Gulf. These condos are typically one or two bedrooms, ranging between $200,000 and $320,000. Single-family homes have a wider range. Renovated ranch and Craftsman-style properties can sell for $350,000 to $500,000, while large, more unique homes can easily have price tags of $550,000 to $950,000. “We’re in a hurricane zone, and the whole island is a flood zone area," Hill says. "Houses are elevated, and people take the necessary precautions that come along with weather hazards. It’s just something you accept if you want to live on the coast.”
High rise condos are yet another home option for those wishing to move to Lake Madeline.

Revving up for the Lone Star Bike Rally
Lake Madeline is only 5 miles from the heart of downtown, so residents are close to the most significant annual events. “We always have something going on here,” Hill says. “Our Mardi Gras event is huge; thousands of people come to celebrate. There’s also the Lone Star Bike Rally on the first weekend of November. It’s a ton of fun.” The rally isn’t just for the love of motorcycles – there are live music events, rodeo games and the crowning of Miss Lone Star. For more than 50 years, Dickens on the Strand has brought Victorian London-inspired holiday cheer to the island on the first weekend of December. Vendors dress up in Victorian-era attire, selling food, drinks and artisanal crafts. A large community parade marches down 20th Street, and stages are set up for musical acts and kid-friendly holiday performances.
Shopping at Walmart and exploring The Strand
The nearby Randall’s Grocery Store on Central City Boulevard means residents of the neighborhood don’t have to travel far to stock up on groceries, and the Walmart Supercenter on Seawall Boulevard makes it convenient to pick up any home necessities. “Lake Madeline is about 10 minutes from The Strand,” Hill says. “It’s comparable to downtown New Orleans with the architecture and cobblestone streets. It’s where the most unique shopping and dining is.” Within the neighborhood is Sapori, which serves up authentic Italian cuisine in an informal setting, while Mel’s Blueplate & Seafood Express offers fresh shrimp and po' boy sandwiches.
Schools in the Galveston ISD
The Galveston Independent School District (ISD) allows parents to choose the schools their children attend. The district also provides transportation no matter which schools are chosen. Parker Elementary, just northeast of the Lake Madeline community, earns a B grade from Niche. Austin Middle has a B rating. Students at Ball High School, rated B, can participate in school-sponsored clubs ranging from the e-sports team to the Acts of Random Kindness Club. They can also choose from more than 20 varsity sports. Alternatively, nearby O’Connell College Preparatory School provides a private education route and earns an A-plus from Niche.

Getting to the mainland via Interstate 45
Interstate 45, which leads across the West Bay and onto the mainland, is the most major thoroughfare for making the 50-mile drive into downtown Houston. The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is only a 7-mile drive. While there are few sidewalks in the neighborhood, plenty of residents get around by bike for transportation and exercise. A car is necessary for more extensive travel as there are no rapid transit stops in the area.
