A quiet coastal life in Offatts Bayou
Broker and Re/Max Coastal owner Mandie McMillan says there are three different styles of living on Galveston Island: Registered historic areas with vintage Victorian homes, tourist hotspots with carousels, and more typical suburbs, like Offatts Bayou that adopt a slower lifestyle. "It's more of a full-time neighborhood than a vacation spot. You've got longtime owners and residents." Short-term rentals are rare here, making getting to know next-door neighbors possible. Locals are just a few miles west of touristy stops like the amusement park rides at the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier without being in the mix. It's almost entirely residential here, but everyday needs can be met close to home. "On the opposite side of the neighborhood is 61st Street, where a lot of people on the island go shopping," says Terrie Farmer or JPAR – The Sears Group, a Galveston Realtor of almost 20 years.

Launching into the deep at Jones Park
McMillan says the water is deeper along Offatts Bayou's coast than in other neighborhoods of Galveston Island. "A few have this depth, but not all of them do. It's something that people with big boats are looking for." If residents don't have a pier at home, the boat ramp at Lee and Joe Jamail Bay Park on 61st Street will get them out on the water. Anglers stop by the park to cast a line from the fishing piers, and several pavilions with picnic tables provide shady spots for picnics. Locals can shoot hoops or take the kids to the playground at Jones Park off 71st Street. However, the park is known to flood even with light rainfall, and it's currently in the planning phase for undergoing significant renovations to make it more flood-resistant. A membership at the Galveston Boat Club on Avenue O affords private boat ramp access, a community pool and a pier. Galveston Beach and Babes Beach are both just over a mile south. The carnival rides and games on the Galveston Island Historic Pier are just over 3.5 miles east. Galveston Island State Park is around 10 miles west.
Offatts Bayou offers several fishing opportunities due to its proximity to the bay.

Bayside homes to inland ranch styles
Architectural styles in Offatts Bayou run the gamut from modest inland ranch styles to ornate Mediterranean Villas fronting the bayou on a half-acre with an inground pool. A fair amount of stilt homes dot the area, and homebuyers will also find brick neo traditionals on the waterfront, which may come as a surprise given that the area is prone to flooding. "Once a year we get at least a tropical storm or two. Sometimes we get pretty devastating hurricanes and then we avoid them for a while,” McMillan says. She adds that the last major hurricane was Ike in 2008, after which many homes had to be rebuilt, but she recommends flood insurance. Residences fronting the bayou from 4,000 to over 5,000 square feet often price from $1 to $2 million. A smaller bayside home that’s 3,000 square feet or less mostly range from the $500,000s to the $800,000s. All of these properties have their own personal docks leading out to the water. The farther one gets from the shore, prices trim back to a $250,000 to $450,000 range.

Waterfront dining at Darlene's Shrimp Shack
Shopping and dining surround 61st Street and Stewart Road. Darlene's Shrimp Shack is a small, colorful food truck by the water with outdoor dining and a tiny dock out front. Locals dine on seasoned fries and crispy coconut shrimp as they watch boats pass along the water. Known for its pizza and shakes, Gypsy Joynt has a funky vibe with string lights, streamers and colorful murals, making the place feel like a carnival. Island Seafood is the go-to for fresh shrimp, crab and fish. It's also the spot where fishers buy their bait. Galveston Place shopping mall houses discount clothing stores like Marshalls and Ross, and locals can head to Randalls for groceries while they are there. The historic downtown area is just over 4 miles east. "A lot of people go there for shopping. All of the buildings were built in the 1800s. It kind of has that New Orleans look," McMillan says.

Taking 61st Street into greater Galveston
McMillan says cars are essential here as there is no public bus transportation. Getting on and off the Island is easy as 61st Street gives locals direct access to Interstate 45, which heads north toward greater Galveston. William P. Hobby Airport is around 40 miles northwest for air travel. Galveston Amtrak is less than 5 miles east and a 10-minute drive along Harborside Drive. Local houses of worship include Island Church off 69th Street and New Life Fellowship on Avenue P. Moody Gardens, known for its pyramid buildings that house simulated environments, including a rainforest exhibit, is just over a mile east. John Sealey Hospitals, a University of Texas Medical Branch facility, is about a 5-mile drive from Offatts Bayou.

Weekend fun at the sandbar in Offatts Bayou
Locals head to the sandbar during the summer for a good time. "It is in Offatts Bayou, right as you're heading out into West Bay," says Galveston local Susan Cahill, a Realtor with Better Homes and Garden Gary Greene. "All summer long, on Saturday and Sunday, people bring their boats and anchor them together. It's just like a big party." She says people play music from their boats and walk through the shallow waters to visit friends. "It's a lot of fun." No matter where residents wake on Offatts Bayou, it's a short drive to the water from this slice of Galveston that runs on Island time.
