With luxury homes lining the streets and live oak trees dotting the landscape of the rolling hills, Comal is the epitome of Hill Country living. This area can feel so secluded, some homebuyers might be surprised that it’s just miles from larger cities. “A lot of people are migrating from metropolitan areas to Comal County because it’s more rural and there’s more land,” says Lynda Escalante, a Realtor with Vista Realty. “It’s also a huge corridor. It’s accessible because the major thoroughfare — Interstate 35 — runs right through the county.” Comal residents can feel secluded from the world at home but have a quick trip into New Braunfels to run errands, see a movie or dine at a popular restaurant. Nearby I-35 makes getting to San Antonio, San Marcos or Austin easy.
Private homes on spacious lots
Driving through Comal, homebuyers will find large homes atop the rolling hills of the countryside. Several of these homes are in private gated communities. Architecture styles vary, but Mediterranean and contemporary farmhouse-style homes are common. These farmhouses typically feature brick or stone exteriors with wood accents and metal roofing. Long driveways and yards full of live oaks offer added privacy for residents. These homes in the rural areas typically cost between $800,000 and $1.5 million. For buyers who want to be closer to their neighbors, there are new traditional homes in subdivisions, often with spacious built-in garages on the front of the house. These homes typically cost between $500,000 and $700,000 for a four-bedroom home.

Texas' oldest bar
While most of Comal is rural, there are some dining options. Lone Star Float House and Grill is a seasonal riverside restaurant known for tacos and beer. This casual spot offers scenic views of the river from its outdoor patio and frequently has live music. Riley’s Tavern claims to be the oldest bar in Texas, with a history dating back to the end of Prohibition in 1933. Locals enjoy the nachos and live music at this long-standing dive bar. There are several grocery stores in New Braunfels, including an H-E-B in the WestPointe Village shopping center and an H-E-B plus! right off I-35. Residents can also shop at stores closer to Highway 281, such as the Sprouts Farmers Market on Bulverde Road. There is a Target along I-35 just northeast of New Braunfels for other household items.
Outdoor activities
With Canyon Lake nearby and the Guadalupe River meandering through the area, outdoor activity in Comal is popular with both residents and visitors. “There is a lot of tourism. People come for different reasons, but it’s mostly water recreation in the summer. There are things to do year-round,” says Escalante. Residents can rent innertubes at several outfitters along the river and spend the day floating through the countryside. Canyon Lake has several parks along its shores, including Comal Park, about 17 miles from the heart of Comal. This 116-acre park has two boat ramps and a swimming beach. Visitors can set up a picnic and grill out or play a game of volleyball or soccer next to the lake. Natural Bridge Caverns is a family-owned cavern on Comal’s west side, offering walking and spelunking tours of the caves. Locals enjoy movie nights at Stars & Stripes Drive-In on the east side of I-35. This 1950s-themed theater shows movies year-round and has an old-fashioned diner for concessions.
