5 miles from LSU

Gardere is a unique suburb built in the 1980s for the professors and students of Louisiana State University. In fact, several university clubs and athletic complexes call the neighborhood home. Located along the edges of South Baton Rouge, this unincorporated community is only 8 miles from the center of the state capital. The area boasts wide expanses of green space and room to develop. Also known as Riverland, this community has spectacular views of the Mississippi River too. A laid-back lifestyle predominates in Gardere, where residents can relax after classes or a hard day of work while chatting with neighbors and taking in the sunset over the water. “It’s an up-and-coming community with a lot of development going on. That development is going to really help the area flourish. Plus, it’s incredibly convenient to Baton Rouge and all the festivals there,” says local Realtor Shane Robertson with Flavin Realty.

French Louisiana-style housing

Houses in the neighborhood are a charming mix of old and new, with traditional styles interlaced with contemporary minimalist designs. Cottages and Acadian-style homes mingle with French Provincials and New Orleans-style residences. There are also ranch-style dwellings and modern designs like the snout house where the garage is the most prominent street-facing feature. Lawns are well-kept here and some make use of the native flora to landscape. Prices range from $125,000 for a single-story house to over $1 million for a new construction with four bedrooms and five bathrooms near the river.
