La Prada
Established area with some newer construction near I-30
Like much of Texas, brick ranch-style houses dominate La Prada and are situated on narrow roads. Some homes may have garages or carports. Ranch-style houses range from $280,000 to $362,000, primarily built in the 1970s. There are also some mid-century modern homes ranging from $340,000 to $369,000. Other sections of the neighborhood have backyard garages and alleys, so residents may utilize street parking. Sidewalks line the majority of roads, often covered by mature trees. Some residences may have in-ground backyard pools. New Traditional homes, with prices ranging from $279,999 to $490,000, were built from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. Most of these are ranch-style homes, but two-story ones are scattered throughout as well.Restaurants to the east and Town East Mall to the south
Along West Oates Road is Audubon Village, home to Taste of Philippines, Southern Maid Donuts and other smaller restaurants. In the southeastern corner is a Walmart Supercenter, as well as some chain eateries and The Catch: Garland, a seafood spot. At Interstate 635 and Oates Drive are more chain restaurants, along with Scrambles Homestyle Grill, a breakfast restaurant, and Brickhouse Games. The Town East Mall is a mile south and has over 160 stores, including anchor retail giants Macy’s, Dillard’s and JCPenney. North of the neighborhood is grocery store WinCo, Dollar Tree and Ross Dress for Less.Fall fest and marathon in Garland
Both Garland and Mesquite host community events, with Downtown Garland about 6 miles north and downtown Mesquite about 8 miles south. The Garland Fall Fest & Guzzler Run takes place in September, and the Dia De Los Muertos celebration has food trucks and live music from a Mariachi band. Mesquite also has seasonal events throughout the year. Downtown Dallas is about 15 miles west.Garland and Mesquite ISD covers the neighborhood
Since the neighborhood covers two cities, students living in La Prada may attend one of two school districts. In the north, kids are zoned to Garland Independent School District, which operates under a “Choice of School” philosophy. Families can pick what school to attend at each grade level. Heather Glen Elementary covers pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Students move up to J.W. O’Banion Middle School and then South Garland High School. All three schools earn a C-plus from Niche. “We have Polytechnic programs that prepare the kids for college and career readiness starting in kindergarten,” Realtor Abell says. Mesquite Independent School District covers the southern portion of the neighborhood. Students can begin their educational journey at Price Elementary, which earns a grade of B from Niche, before moving to Kimbrough Middle School. The middle school gets a B-minus. Ralph H. Poteet High earns an A-minus from Niche. Dallas Christian School is a private, faith-based option that sits in the southwestern corner and earns an A from Niche. The school goes from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.Multiple green spaces, including a green belt to the east
Along the eastern section of La Prada is the Duck Creek Greenbelt, which covers over 230 acres and has areas for baseball, football, soccer and softball. There also are lakes where fishing is allowed. Cody Park mainly consists of sport facilities that can be reserved by the hour through the City of Garland. Mesquite Golf Club is a public course with 18 holes over 150 acres, while across Interstate 635 is the Dallas Athletic Club, a private country club with two 18-hole courses designed by Jack Nicklaus. Audubon Recreation Center was reopened in 2019 after a renovation that added a new fitness room. The recreation center also offers classes and is next to the Surf and Swim Wave Pool.At the intersection of Interstates 30 and 635
Although Garland is generally a car-dependent community, Dallas Area Rapid Transit has several bus routes throughout La Prada. “The Dallas Area Rapid Transit also has a light rail that can get you from Garland to Rowlett, and Rowlett to Allen and even to the airport and south Dallas,” Abell says. The Downtown Garland Station is almost 5 miles north. The Baylor Senior Health Center is in the southwestern corner of the neighborhood, where Interstate 30 meets I-635.
