Historic central Glastonbury community
Home to the now defunct J.B. Williams shaving soap company factory and offices, a major employer in its day, The J.B. Williams Company Historic District, sometimes referred to as Buttonball, provides proximity to many of Glastonbury’s amenities. The factory in this centrally located enclave was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. In the present day, the area is home to a mix of housing options, ranging from condos, townhomes, and single-family homes, with prices that are often lower than homes in surrounding communities. Residents can enjoy proximity to many of the city’s amenities with convenient highway access, and proximity to the Connecticut River means many parks and outdoor spaces are nearby.

Nearby Glastonbury Public Schools
The community is notably under the protection of the Glastonbury Guardians, the mascot of Glastonbury High School. Glastonbury High, an A-plus rated school according to Niche, is home to the Glastonbury Agriscience and Technology Program, where students can choose one of four pathways to pursue careers in natural resources, plant or animal science, or agricultural mechanics. Before then, students might attend Buttonball Lane School, which teaches from prekindergarten until fifth grade and has an 8-out-of-10 GreatSchools rating, followed by Smith Middle School with an A Niche grade.

An abundance of housing options
The community might only encompass a few streets, but there are still various housing options for prospective residents. Condos in the Soap Factory complex have recently sold between $120,000 and $170,000, many of which have undergone complete remodels. There’s also an abundance of townhomes nearby. Single-family homes often include brown split levels with driveways, wide-roofed ranchers that sit on street corners, and the brick chimneys and peaked roofs of pale blue Cape Cods sit across front yards, up and away from traffic. Real estate prices for houses can range anywhere from $300,000 to $500,000. The historic homes of the J.B. William family are located near the factory campus -- one of these 19th and 20th-century dwellings has distinctive turreted windows and a wraparound porch. The factory and office buildings have since been converted to multi-use office space.

Taking in the river views
The community is surrounded by many of central Glastonbury’s outdoor spaces. Williams Pond and the towering trees around it sit next to the former factory complex. Nearby, Riverfront Park is a great space for an afternoon outing, with boating areas, walking paths, athletic fields, and courts. Of course, there’s also space for a picnic while enjoying the river views. Dog owners in the area can take their companions to the Glastonbury Dog Park to make new friends and burn off some energy.
