Rural streets and protected land in central Connecticut
A tale of two landscapes unfolds in Minnechaug, a neighborhood in central Connecticut less than 15 miles east of Hartford. The western half of the neighborhood is lined by a network of residential streets, where homes are often separated by dense patches of trees on the outskirts of Glastonbury. The eastern half sits south of Manchester and is largely unincorporated, mostly comprised of the Edmund Gorman Open Space. “It has a more rural feel,” says Bob LaPerla, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England. “They built a shopping plaza out there with the Highland Market, a bank and a Walgreens. You also have the Buckingham Church, which is somewhat historic. Very rural.”
The rural atmosphere persists throughout the area, as Minnechaug itself was built on Minnechaug Mountain; however, the mountain isn’t all that prominent, only rising around 700 feet above sea level. “There’s a development of probably 200 houses,” says Harry Finer, the sales vice president of William Raveis Real Estate. “Many houses have views of Hartford. That’s an attribute of living up there.” Glastonbury as a whole is a former farm town, but developments have transformed the area. “There’s great restaurants, a great community and great schools,” says Mavourneen Costello, a Realtor with NextHome Elite Realty. “People are born and raised there, and a lot of people don’t move out of Glastonbury.”
Housing variety and property privacy
Minnechaug’s housing is concentrated on the west side, with rural streets winding through the neighborhood before the landscape gives way to the Edmund Gorman Open Space. Colonial-style architecture is the most common design for homes in the neighborhood, but Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and split-levels are mixed in as well. “There’s everything up there,” Finer says of the architectural styles. “There’s one-of-a-kind housing and custom homes, and those custom homes are now 30 years old or more.” Single-family homes are often priced between $450,000 and $900,000. Large, stately homes and custom designs can cost up to $1 million or more. Most homes have acreage and are separated from neighboring properties by trees. Crime in Minnechaug has a CAP score of 1, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
Local sports facilities and open spaces
Residents can roam the trails at the Edmund Gorman Open Space or head to more established parks around the neighborhood. The only recreational spot within Minnechaug takes the form of the Minnechaug Golf Course, which sits at the base of the mountain and spans nine holes. “At the base, there’s sports fields,” Finer says. “The town is big into soccer, football and baseball. There’s lots of kids’ leagues and whatnot.”
Locals can also walk around the Buckingham Reservoir, but biking, swimming and other forms of recreation are prohibited. Outside of Minnechaug, Blackledge Falls features trails and an eponymous waterfall while sitting alongside Gay City State Park. The state facility encompasses over 1,500 acres, with miles of trails and a beach among its amenities. The Minnechaug Swim & Tennis Club accommodates those looking to hit the pool or court.
Three schools rated an A or better
Glastonbury Public Schools serves the area, though no schools are situated within Minnechaug. The Hebron Avenue School sits just west of the neighborhood and earns an A from Niche. Smith Middle School sits just south, spanning sixth through eighth grades and also garnering an A rating, and the A-plus-rated Glastonbury High School concludes grade-school education for Minnechaug students. Clubs at Glastonbury High include organizations centered around baking, rocketry, archery and more.
Seasonal events and annual tributes
Each fall, the Glastonbury Apple Harvest & Music Festival draws thousands of visitors in October to ring in the autumn season. The event features live music, a road race, carnival rides and more. In September, the annual Hike to Remember is put on by the Peter P. Monaco Detachment 40 to raise awareness and funds for military veterans suffering from PTSD. “They have a parade of 400-plus members of the Marines and Army,” Finer says. “They march through the center of town. It’s a sight to see.”
Rural surroundings linked to major areas
Route 94 runs along the south side of Minnechaug, linking Glastonbury with Hebron. Access to Interstate 384 is about 2 miles north of the neighborhood, which connects to Interstate 84. “It’s convenient to Route 384,” Finer says. “Route 384 connects you to everything.” I-84 runs through parts of Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Access to Route 2 sits about 5 miles west of the neighborhood. Manchester is a trip of less than 4 miles north, while Glastonbury proper is less than 5 miles away and Hartford is just over 10 miles from Minnechaug.
Few shops within Minnechaug, but a vibrant farming scene
Within the neighborhood, the Birch Hill Tavern offers classic American fare in a small shopping center near the Highland Market. Minnechaug locals typically head into Manchester or Glastonbury to go out to eat or shop. “Glastonbury has lots of restaurants,” Finer says. “We have Whole Foods, two Stop & Shops, four or five pizza places and high-end restaurants. Everything you could want is in the center of Glastonbury.”
About a mile south of the Minnechaug Golf Course, residents find groceries at the Highland Market. “It’s a nice community,” Finer says. “There’s a center of town where everything is and people congregate.” Farms and orchards are one of the area’s hallmarks. “Farms have pumpkin patches, Christmas trees, blueberries, apples, peaches, pears, bakeries, chestnuts and strawberries,” Finer says. “We have the oldest-operating cider mill, and we have the oldest continuously-operating ferry boat, which goes across the Connecticut River.”
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
