Rancho San Rafael
Spanish-style single-family homes and duplexes
Housing in Rancho San Rafael consists mainly of contemporary two-story properties, both single-family homes and large duplexes. Most houses feature Spanish-style architecture, including stucco exteriors and clay tile roofs. The homes are generally a bit larger than those found in older parts of Glendale, and views of the surrounding hills are common. Yards in the area are artfully landscaped and carefully maintained. Both single-family homes and townhouses typically sell for between $1.2 and $1.5 million. The open spaces surrounding the neighborhood create some fire risk, which can affect insurance prices.Lots of mixed-use trails around the area
Outdoor recreation is a defining feature of life in Rancho San Rafael. While there aren’t any well-defined parks here, the surrounding foothills are laced with mixed-use trails, including the Ridge Motorway Trail, a 4-mile track popular with hikers and bikers that offers great views. The Ridge Motorway runs north of the neighborhood to San Rafael Hill, which overlooks both the Glendale Sports Complex and Cherry Canyon Park. The sports complex hosts local youth soccer and baseball leagues, while the park offers winding dirt trails used by hikers, bikers and horseback riders. It’s also less than 10 miles by car from Rancho San Rafael to the San Gabriel Mountains and Angeles National Forest.Glendale's highly-rated public schools
Most Rancho San Rafael students attend local public schools overseen by Glendale Unified School District, which has an impressive A rating on Niche. Verdugo Woodlands Elementary has an A-minus rating, Woodrow Wilson Middle has a B, and Glendale High School has a B-plus. Glendale High is known for its successful dance/drill team, which has won over 50 national titles in various dance categories since 1999. The neighborhood is also just across the highway from Glendale Community College, which puts on a number of sporting events and live performances throughout the year.A short drive to shopping in Montrose and Glendale
There isn’t any shopping or dining within San Rafael, as the neighborhood is entirely residential. However, major commercial areas are easily accessible by car. “It’s pretty easy to get to Montrose, which is where most people in the area do their shopping,” says Weaver. “You’re also not too far from downtown Glendale and the Galeria, so there are lots of options. But you definitely need a car.” Both downtown Glendale and Montrose’s retail area are about 4 miles away from Rancho San Rafael by car, and both areas offer extensive shopping and dining opportunities. And it’s less than 2 miles from the neighborhood to the nearest grocery store, Golden Farms Market.Easy to get around by car
Transportation in Rancho San Rafael is largely car-dependent, as there are no public transit options in or near the neighborhood. State Route 2 passes just west of the neighborhood, connecting to both Interstate 210 to the north and state Route 134 to the south. It’s about 7 miles by car to both Pasadena and Burbank, while downtown LA is about 10 miles away. Hollywood Burbank Airport is just over 11 miles away and offers flights to over 30 destinations in the U.S.
