Bender pairs a cozy setting and convenience near Interstate 43

Bender is located in the Milwaukee suburb of Glendale, snug between the Milwaukee River and Interstate 43. Despite the nearby freeway, the neighborhood's residential areas often feel quiet and comfortable, especially toward the river. Residents enjoy Bender’s pairing of privacy and convenience in a cozy setting. “There are some really nice Colonials in there. Some interesting midcentury modern homes as well. It’s a little tucked away,” says Pete Gohsman, Realtor with the Gohsman Group of Keller Williams Milwaukee North Shore, who lives in Glendale. “But it’s probably one of the more upscale neighborhoods in Glendale, I’d say.”

Midcentury ranch-style and Colonial Revival houses, plus condos

Gently curving drives branch off Bender Road, flanked by midcentury-era homes and well-maintained front yards. Some of the area’s properties back to the Milwaukee River, offering water views. The neighborhood’s inventory is mainly comprised of ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes, with prices ranging from $250,000 to $500,000. A handful of condos are also available in Bender, which sell between $240,000 and $275,000.

Highly rated schools include Nicolet Union High and private options

The Glendale-River Hills School District serves Bender for elementary and middle school, earning a B-plus grade from Niche. Parkway Elementary, for kindergarten through third grade, receives a B-plus, while Glen Hills Middle, for fourth through eighth, scores a B. Students can then move on to the A-graded Nicolet Union High, the only school within the Nicolet Union High School District. Niche ranks it the sixth-best public high school in the state.

Nearby private options include Eastbrook Academy, for kindergarten through 12th grade, and Dominican High, each receiving an A rating.

Bayshore attracts shoppers from across the North Shore

Several hardware shops and mechanics sit along Port Washington Road on the neighborhood’s east side. The most popular attraction is Bayshore, a mixed-use shopping center, which has been open for over 70 years. “There are people from Whitefish Bay, Mequon, Milwaukee, East Side, Shorewood, all over that come to Bayshore to shop,” Gohsman says. The outdoor mall houses an Apple store and retailers such as Target and Kohl’s. Eateries include Rocky Rococo Pizza & Pasta and Mallard’s Restaurant, which serves coastal-inspired fare. The Bayshore Trader Joe’s is the closest grocery store to the neighborhood.

Nearby recreation includes Kletzsch Park and Lincoln Park

Parks and trails traverse the banks of the Milwaukee River around Bender. The Oak Leaf Trail follows the Milwaukee River Parkway north to Kletzsch Park, which features facilities for sports like softball, volleyball and soccer. Lincoln Park is 2 miles the opposite way and has a nine-hole golf course, basketball courts and a pool. Meanwhile, Richard E. Maslowski Glendale Community Park is about a mile from Bender and has baseball fields, an expansive playground and an amphitheater.

Glendale's city events bring together the community

The city of Glendale organizes plenty of community events for residents. The annual Fourth of July celebration is the most prominent, featuring a parade, food trucks and fireworks at Kletzsch Park. The North Shore Fire Department also stops by for a “summer soak,” as the fire engine cools kids off with a light shower. Over the warmer months, Glendale also organizes weekly concerts at Glendale Community Park.

Milwaukee is 7 miles away via the freeway

Most residential streets in Bender don’t have sidewalks, though locals can still take a morning stroll or walk their dogs on the side of the road. Bender Road has dedicated bike lanes, though they merge back in with traffic at either end of the neighborhood. While the Milwaukee County Transit System offers bus service nearby, residents mainly drive to get around. Downtown Milwaukee is roughly a 7-mile trip via Interstate 43, which runs along Bender’s eastern edge. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is closer to 16 miles away.

Flood risk along the Milwaukee River, including some Bender homes

Homes in Bender, especially those along the Milwaukee River, may be at risk of flooding. In August 2025, severe rainfall raised the river to a record level, causing some property damage.
