Life in Nicolet centers around its namesake public high school

Nicolet is a small residential community in Glendale, one of Milwaukee’s North Shore suburbs. Nicolet shares its name and identity with the public high school. “Nicolet Union High School is the high school for the area, and it encompasses Glendale, Bayside, Fox Point and River Hills, where other communities like Whitefish Bay and Shorewood have their own schools,” says Glendale resident Florence Carneol, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. Students live within walking distance of the high school campus, and its sports teams bring homebuyers to the neighborhood. Meanwhile, the community’s location along Interstate 43 means commuters can easily get to downtown Milwaukee for work.

A-rated Nicolet Union High School's basketball team

Parkway Elementary School covers kindergarten through third grade and receives a B-plus from Niche. B-rated Glen Hills Middle School teaches fourth through eighth grade students. Nicolet Union High School receives an A rating. “Nicolet is known for their basketball team. They won the state championship in 2019,” Carneol says. “They had these two brothers who were really good and moved to Nicolet to finish off high school and play.” While students can walk to school, Carneol says many ride their bikes instead.

Diverse housing styles with gardens throughout Nicolet

Nicolet's wide streets offer a mix of architectural styles, from Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals with Tudor influences, to cottages and ranch-style homes. Most properties include garages, and many driveways have basketball hoops. In front yards, overhanging trees shade well-maintained flower gardens. Prices here typically start around $400,000 and reach $650,000. Homes in Nicolet are more expensive than in surrounding communities like Parkway, but Carneol says businesses and industry decrease the suburb's taxes, so residents can expect to pay less than in areas like Whitefish Bay or Fox Point. While flooding isn’t common, Glendale experienced flash flooding from the Milwaukee River in August 2025 that caused property damage and road blockages.

Walking the Oak Leaf Trail and exploring Klezsch Park

Klezsch Park is on the other side of the Milwaukee River from Nicolet. “There’s a little waterfall, so people go there to fly fish,” Carneol says. The park also has a playground, baseball diamonds, soccer fields and an archery range. Trails go through the woods, including the paved Oak Leaf Trail, which stretches 135 miles across Milwaukee. This portion is part of the Milwaukee River Line. “There’s a big hill kids go sledding down in the winter,” Carneol says, adding that people will use it for exercise the rest of the year. Richard E. Maslowski Glendale Community Park includes an inclusive and accessible playground. The plaza area with picnic tables hosts a lot of summer concerts. Visitors can also stop at the Sprecher Brewing Outdoor Oasis, the park’s beer garden, for drinks and food.

Local restaurants and shops at Bayshore mall

The Brick Pub and Grill has two outdoor patios and 14 TVs inside playing current games. Bistro on the Glen serves burgers and steaks, but many come for the jumbo shrimp. Bayshore is Glendale’s mall, located on the other side of I-43. It has chains and big retailers like Nike, Ulta and Old Navy. Target and Trader Joe’s are about 2 miles away, and there's an Aldi less than a mile from Nicolet.

Summer concerts, fireworks and festivals in local parks

The community park hosts a couple of summer concert series. Concerts in the Park kicks off the season on Wednesday nights in June and July, while Rhythm Nights takes over Thursday and Saturday evenings from July to September. The Fourth of July Celebration takes place in Kletzsch Park and includes a parade, food truck festival and live music. The fire department sets up a fire truck and lets the hose rain down for the Summer Soak.

Taking the interstate downtown and to the airport

Compared to other Glendale communities, Nicolet is more car-dependent. Some things, like the school, are within walking distance, but most buses stop just beyond the neighborhood. Commuters can hop on I-43 to downtown Milwaukee, about 8 miles away. However, because the interstate is so close to the community, residents living on the eastern side may hear traffic. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is about 15 miles away. Aurora Urgent Care is 3 miles away in Glendale, while Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital-St. Joseph is a 6-mile trip.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
