Gloster-Kickapoo is a former farming town south of Shreveport
Gloster-Kickapoo is a rural community nestled in the flat fields and pine forests of northwest Louisiana. It has a few hundred homes, some farm properties, a post office and several shops. Commuting is an option as it’s located about 30 miles south of Shreveport, the third most populous city in the state. “It was a dairy farming area for about a half a century, but the dairy farms are all gone now. Some people have switched to beef cattle,” says David Waren, owner of Sunrise Cookies, a small bakery and takeaway shop that’s been in the community since 2004. “Everyone kind of knows each other. A lot of families have been here for a long time. If you don’t know someone in particular, you know someone who knows someone, or you know of someone.”

Farm properties and recently built homes on large lots
Gloster-Kickapoo offers a mix of residential streets in addition to homes on large rural properties. “It’s quiet. You get a lot of privacy," Waren says. While some older homes are found here, much of the housing stock has been built in the last 20 years or so. Traditional, ranch and contemporary designs are among the most common styles in the neighborhood. Most of them sit on lots that are a half-acre or larger. Prices range from around $200,000 to $400,000 depending on home size, age and acreage. Around 85% of residents are homeowners. The area gets a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to 4 nationally.

Getting to Shreveport on U.S. 171
U.S. Route 171 runs north to south through the community, easing commute times for people driving to Shreveport. “Most of the folks here work in government, schools or law enforcement. A lot of them make the drive up to Shreveport or Bossier,” Waren says. There’s no public transportation, so residents will likely need a car to get around. The community is also not very walkable, due to its lack of sidewalks. The Willis-Knighton Medical Centre, the largest in the area, is about 22 miles away.
