Black River is a rural town with room to spread out near Fayetteville

The Black River flows through the northeastern corner of this rural township, giving it a rather fitting name. Just over 2,000 people live in Black River, a quiet community where farmland and forests surround the independent towns of Godwin and Falcon. It offers a slower pace of life near Interstate 95, which passes through town and connects residents to nearby shops, restaurants and cities that are otherwise outside of their daily routine. The interstate also allows commuters to reach Fayetteville, less than 20 miles away, and Fort Bragg, which is less than 30 miles from the township and is the largest United States Army base by population.

Homebuyers can find country settings, small villages and new builds

Many homes in Black River sit back from winding two-lane roads on tree-lined lots that span up to several acres. Common housing options include ranch-style and Cape Cod-style builds, along with new construction from the 2020s. Godwin and Falcon are more densely populated, with ranch-style homes and cottages on quiet streets. Older single-family homes typically sell for $210,000 to $300,000, while prices for new builds range from $340,000 to $440,000. Some rural properties use well water and septic systems. There’s also room to build, with parcels selling for $60,000 to $170,000, depending on acreage.

Education at Cumberland County Schools and Falcon Christian Academy

The Cumberland County Schools system earns an overall grade of B from Niche. District 7 Elementary School and Cape Fear High School both score a B-plus, while Mac Williams Middle School receives a B. Cape Fear High School’s Academy of Agriculture and Natural Sciences collaborates with local colleges to prepare students for careers in agriculture-related fields. Students can explore hands-on pathways such as Animal Science, Agricultural Mechanics, Horticulture and Natural Resources, with options to earn college credit and professional certifications. Falcon Christian Academy is a private kindergarten through 12th-grade school that has not yet received a Niche rating.

Recreation includes fishing in Rhodes Pond and exploring local parks

Cypress trees and lily pads frame Rhodes Pond, a public fishing area in the town’s northern half. Residents can launch kayaks and canoes from the boat ramp, or fish for largemouth bass and bowfin from the wooden dock. Godwin is home to Willie J. Burnette Park, which has a playground, splash pad, basketball court and a paved walking path. It also hosts the town's annual Juneteenth Celebration, which includes a parade and live entertainment. In Falcon, J.O. Humphries Memorial Park features two playgrounds, a swing set and a sand volleyball court. Locals gather in the park for events like Falcon Family Day, a September staple with activities for all ages. Golfers are about 12 miles from the public 18-hole courses at Sandy Ridge Country Club and Chicora Golf Club, while off-roaders are just over 20 miles from an expansive trail network in Deep Creek ATV Park.

Few businesses in Black River, so locals drive for shopping and dining

Godwin Foodmart sits off I-95 and offers gas, snacks and convenience store staples. Black River’s farming roots are on display at Berry Blessed Farms, where residents can pick blueberries each summer. The town has several houses of worship, including South River Community Church and Culbreth Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church. Falcon is also home to the North Carolina International Pentecostal Holiness Church School of Ministry.
While there are a few options in town, most shopping and dining happen elsewhere. DG Market is about 6 miles away for basics, and Eastover IGA is roughly 10 miles south on I-95 for larger grocery trips. Eastover also has a few restaurants, like Fox’s Pizza Den for casual bites and Corner Grill for American classics. Dunn, about 13 miles out, has shopping centers with bigger retailers like Walmart, Dollar Tree and Lowe’s.

A car-dependent area within reach of Fayetteville and Raleigh

Residents live in a heavily car-dependent area with few sidewalks and no public transportation. I-95 and U.S. Route 301 are the town’s main roads, carrying traffic north and south through North Carolina. Bigger cities are within reach, with Fayetteville less than 20 miles southwest and Raleigh about 40 miles north of Black River. It’s a 22-mile drive to Fayetteville Regional Airport for flights to Charlotte and Atlanta, and about 65 miles to Raleigh-Durham International Airport for more options. The nearest hospital is Cape Fear Valley Betsy Johnson Healthcare, around 12 miles away.
