Modern-day subdivision in a small gold rush-era city
Creekside is a residential development in Gold Bar, a small Snohomish County city. Set in the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range, the area once housed villages of the Skykomish tribe. "It's absolutely beautiful. I bought my house because of the view from my deck," says Candace Tornay-Gonzalez, artist and owner of Bella Luna Mosaics and Garden Art.
Not surprisingly, the name Gold Bar connects to the area's late-19th-century history. "The region was founded during a mini gold rush," says Melody Dazey, the economic development and tourism manager for the Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce. The search for gold didn't pan out as the prospectors hoped. "It wasn't a sizeable amount, not like California," Dazey says. "Though you can still find some gold when panning by the riverside." Railroads, logging and granite quarrying had more significant roles in developing the region than mining did.
Contemporary homes with 1,000 to 2,200 square feet
Creekside, in the space between two forks of May Creek, is a small neighborhood of streets that branch off Amanda Avenue. Construction dates to the late 1990s through the 2010s. Contemporary homes of 1,000 to 2,200 square feet have driveways and multicar garages and come in a variety of colors. Some have custom features like fully fenced backyards, fruit trees, fire pits and patios. Prices can range from the high-$300,000s to the mid-$600,000s. "When I bought my house in 2010, it was $225,000. It's a 3-bedroom, 2-bath on a third of an acre. Now it's worth over $500,000," Tornay-Gonzalez says.
Flooding is possible in the area, so residents are advised to keep abreast of the National Weather Service warnings. The city of Gold Bar has an ordinance related to the establishment of areas of "special flood hazard." Flood insurance rate maps (FIRMs) are on file with the city.
Contemporary and newer built homes sit along the quiet streets of the Creekside neighborhood.

Wallace Falls State Park, trails and rock climbing
Creekside residents have a state park entry point within a few miles of their homes. "Wallace Falls in Gold Bar is one of the most popular state parks," Dazey says. "The waterfalls are in a series of three drops: lower, middle and upper. It's kind of 'choose your own adventure.'" Dazey says the hike to Middle Falls is probably the most popular. Due to the high number of park visitors, the parking lot may fill up.
Gold Bar's section of the Skykomish River is known as a white-water rafting destination, and Alpine Adventures operates rafting trips. Nearby, Reiter Foothills State Forest has numerous hiking trails and rock-climbing spots. A parking area to access bouldering routes is off Reiter Road.

Gold Dust Day, salmon stuff and the State Fair
Gold Dust Days Heritage Festival, held the last weekend in July, celebrates the area's history. "As part of Gold Dust Day, we had a miner's cart race, where three teams built cars and raced them. Gold Bar Elementary hosted," Dazey says. She compares the miner's cart races to outhouse and bed races, similar to soap box derby races.
In late September, Sultan, about 8 miles from Creekside, holds the Return of the Salmon Celebration. It marks the spawning of the salmon in the Snohomish River System. Dazey says people look out for hundreds of thousands of pink salmon, or "humpy" salmon, on "pink years," usually every other year. More of the fish-family lifecycle is on view at the Wallace River Salmon Hatchery, just northwest of Gold Bar. Monroe, about 15 miles west, is the site of The Evergreen State Fair, held in late summer.
Proximity to U.S. Route 2, bus to Everett, DART
With U.S. 2 right here, travel to nearby cities and the mountains is accessible, though traffic can be an issue depending on the season and the weather. Tornay-Gonzalez says backups can be so bad that locals don't even try to go out. It's especially congested on Fridays and Sundays. Everett and Bothell are within a 30-mile drive, and Bellevue and Seattle are within 45 miles. Community Transit's bus Route 271 goes from Gold Bar to Everett Station. For those needing travel assistance, there's Dial-A-Ride-Transportation (DART).

Gold Bar Family Grocer on Croft Avenue has been serving the community for over 20 years.
The highway also leads to many outdoor attractions, and many people pass through Gold Bar on their way. There are a couple of motels, Gold Bar RV Storage and the seasonal Stevens Pass Snowboard Shop, a fixture since 1969. Stevens Pass Ski Resort is about 35 miles east of Gold Bar.
Creekside locals can treat themselves to coffee and ice cream at the nearby Woodshed Espresso.
