Goodyear’s first residential community

Located about 18 miles from downtown Phoenix, Historic Goodyear is popular for its proximity to parks, shopping centers and Interstate 10. The city of Goodyear was named for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, which built an aircraft plant here during World War II; in the early 1940s, Historic Goodyear became the city's first residential development, designed to house the plant's employees. Today, the Goodyear plant is long gone, and Historic Goodyear is bordered on the west by distribution centers for Amazon and Chewy, two of the area's major employers. Interstate 10 is about a mile north, and the neighborhood is within 3 miles of shopping centers—including the still-developing Goodyear Civic Square—and the 86-acre Goodyear Recreation Campus and Goodyear Ballpark. Area houses of worship include St. John Vianney Catholic Church and Goodyear Church of Christ.

Midcentury ranch-style homes with personal touches

Most of Goodyear’s midcentury ranch-style homes have earth-toned brick or stucco exteriors that complement the surrounding desert landscape, but personal touches like brightly colored trim, driveway basketball hoops and various styles of cinder block fencing give each home its own personality. Yards vary widely too, from manicured lawns with medium-sized trees to yards landscaped with cacti and other low-water plants. The homes here were built from the 1940s through the ‘60s, and prices, which range from $300,000 to $370,000, are usually determined by renovation status. “Most of the owners are original owners,” says Nancy Montano Bran, a Realtor with Homesmart who’s sold homes here for two years, “so some older properties aren’t as updated.” In the center of the neighborhood, the gated Park Shadows apartment complex sits on 38 acres, offering one- to three-bedroom rental units in single-level buildings.

Mexican comfort food at Don Pancho Mexican Food

There are several restaurants along the eastern Central Avenue, like the family-owned Don Pancho Mexican Food, which specializes in Mexican comfort food. National retailers like Target, Michael’s and Barnes & Noble can be found to the north, along with national restaurant chains like Chili’s and Five Guys. At the locally owned Haymaker Goodyear, diners can relax at the bar and enjoy all-day breakfast, barbecue and burgers. Nearby grocery stores include specialty stores like Carniceria La Tapatia and Masale Walla, as well as national chains like Food City and Fry’s.

Spring training at Goodyear Ballpark

Goodyear Ballpark, the spring training home of Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds, is about 3 miles away. Baseball fans flock here each February and March to cheer on the teams as they warm up for the season. The ballpark hosts other events throughout the rest of the year, including regional baseball games and the annual Arizona Balloon Classic each January, a three-day festival of hot air balloons.

Career academies at Agua Fria High

Local kids can start school at Lattie Coor School for pre-kindergarten through Grade 2, and then attend Eliseo C. Felix School for Grades 3 through 5; both earn a C from Niche. Kids can then attend the C-rated Avondale Middle and the B-plus-rated Agua Fria High; at the latter, students can join four career academies, including the Academy of Media, Arts, and Design. Nearby private schools include the unrated St. John Vianney Catholic School for pre-kindergarten through Grade 8.

Free swimming at Goodyear Community Pool

Loma Linda Park is the neighborhood’s largest park, featuring 8 acres of green space with shaded playgrounds and tennis courts. “It’s very clean and has nice curb appeal,” Bran says. “You see kids running around and people exercising.” From April through October, families can cool off for free at Goodyear Community Pool, which is next to the Goodyear Community Center, a public space that hosts senior art classes and can be reserved for birthday parties.

The 86-acre Goodyear Recreation Campus, located about 3 miles west, is the center of outdoor activities in the city. The 30-acre community park’s playground and sports fields are open to the public, but locals have to purchase a pass to take advantage of its aquatics and recreation centers. Youth and adult classes and clubs here include the Goodyear Youth Flag Football League and the Goodyear Stitchers, a club for knitters and sewists. About 5 miles south of Historic Goodyear, the nearly 20,000-acre Estrella Mountain Regional Park offers over 33 miles of hiking trails through the Sonoran Desert.

About a mile from Interstate 10

Interstate 10 is about a mile north, leading roughly 6 miles east to Loop 101 and 19 miles to downtown Phoenix. While there’s no public transportation here, bike lanes and sidewalks make the area friendly for cyclists and pedestrians. Mountain Park Health Center, which offers primary care services, is in the neighborhood’s north, and Abrazo West Campus, which has a Level 1 Trauma center, is around 3 miles north. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is 22 miles east, while the Phoenix Goodyear Airport, a general aviation airport that mainly serves as a reliever and maintenance airport for Sky Harbor, is under 2 miles southwest; the neighborhood is in its flight path. “It’s not a high-traffic airport, but there’s still some noise,” Bran says. “It’s not frequent, and it’s not very loud.”
