Where Goshen and farmland begin to mix
With award-winning schools and relative proximity to the RV manufacturing factories on Goshen’s southeast side, Benton is expanding from its roots as a small, rural community on the banks of the Elkhart River. But there is also no mistaking that this unincorporated area surrounded by corn and soybean fields is at Goshen’s very edge. Almost as soon as U.S. Route 33 crosses the river heading southeast, it leads the way through miles of uninterrupted Indiana farmland.

Fairfield High pride runs deep
Schools are Benton’s calling card. Benton Elementary, which serves kindergarten through sixth grade, receives a B-plus rating on Niche. B-rated Fairfield Junior/Senior High School is the No. 1 high school in Elkhart County according to U.S. News and World Report. High school sports are especially well supported. “In the smaller communities around Elkhart and Goshen, high school games are easily the biggest thing happening on weekends,” says Justin Strefling, an area native who grew up playing high school basketball against those schools. Fairfield’s girls basketball team created a wave of excitement in 2023, winning Indiana’s storied state tournament.
