Where Goshen and farmland begin to mix

With award-winning schools and relative proximity to the RV manufacturing factories on Goshen’s southeast side, Benton is expanding from its roots as a small, rural community on the banks of the Elkhart River. But there is also no mistaking that this unincorporated area surrounded by corn and soybean fields is at Goshen’s very edge. Almost as soon as U.S. Route 33 crosses the river heading southeast, it leads the way through miles of uninterrupted Indiana farmland.

Contemporary custom houses in the Fairfield Farms subdivision, all built between 2000 and the present, range from around $350,000 to $650,000.

Fairfield High pride runs deep

Schools are Benton’s calling card. Benton Elementary, which serves kindergarten through sixth grade, receives a B-plus rating on Niche. B-rated Fairfield Junior/Senior High School is the No. 1 high school in Elkhart County according to U.S. News and World Report. High school sports are especially well supported. “In the smaller communities around Elkhart and Goshen, high school games are easily the biggest thing happening on weekends,” says Justin Strefling, an area native who grew up playing high school basketball against those schools. Fairfield’s girls basketball team created a wave of excitement in 2023, winning Indiana’s storied state tournament.

Convenient access to Goshen's industrial district

Goshen’s sprawling industrial district is less than 4 miles from Benton along U.S. 33. Most of these factories build recreational vehicles or components used in RVs. Goshen is closely tied to nearby Elkhart, which is considered the RV manufacturing capital of the world. “We build really cool things in Goshen and Elkhart County,” says Nick Kieffer, president and CEO of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce. “The craftsmanship and workmanship of the local community really drives that.” Goshen Municipal Airport is just outside of Benton, but is primarily used for private planes. The nearest commercial airport is about 40 miles away in South Bend.

Shopping options require travel

A Dollar General across the street from Fairfield Junior/Senior High School is Benton’s only store. The closest shopping options are about 5 miles away in Goshen, including an Aldi and a Walmart Supercenter. A Menards and Tractor Supply Company are also in the same area of southeast Goshen.

Air shows bring excitement to summer skies

Goshen Municipal Airport hosts a pair of air shows each summer – giving Benton both a noise factor and a wow factor. Air Supremacy over Goshen, a three-day event in late June, features radio-controlled replicas of World War I and World War II aircraft. America’s Freedom Fest is held every July, and features demonstrations by everything from prop biplanes to helicopters and military jets before closing with a fireworks show.
