Conveniently located neighborhood just off of College Avenue

College Green is a suburban-style neighborhood of winding residential streets just off College Avenue on Goshen’s south side. Location is the draw for this primarily residential area, putting residents close to employers such as Goshen College, Goshen Hospital and Greencroft Goshen retirement community. The neighborhood is also just 2 miles from Historic Downtown Goshen, an area that Goshen Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Nick Kieffer describes as “intact, vibrant and full of businesses.”

Late 20th century condos and ranch-style homes are predominant

College Green has two styles of housing for sale as well as an apartment complex. Condos ranging from one to three bedrooms make up the neighborhood’s west side, and single-family, ranch-style homes are predominantly east of Winsted Drive. Houses and condos are similar in appearance, almost uniformly constructed in brick and vinyl siding styles prominent in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Goshen is known as The Maple City, and maples dot nearly every yard, though considerably younger and shorter than the towering, mature maples found in Goshen’s older neighborhoods. Condos in College Green sell from $110,000 to just over $300,000, while houses range between $250,000 and $380,000.

Fidler Pond Park is an area asset

Fidler Pond Park is just across U.S. 33 from College Green. The park’s primary feature is a gravel walking and biking trail around the circumference of Fidler Pond that can be used year-round. When the weather permits, Fidler Pond itself is the jewel, featuring a dock that can be used for canoes, kayaks and small fishing boats. The park also features a covered pavilion, restrooms, and a firepit near the pond’s shoreline. Goshen Soccer Academy is also in the neighborhood. In addition to its youth leagues and academy, GSA offers futsal leagues — a form of 5-on-5 soccer played on indoor courts. Racquetball, pickleball, basketball and volleyball courts are also available at the facility.

Parkside Elementary strives to keep grade schoolers connected

Kindergarten through fourth-grade students attend Parkside Elementary, which earns a B-plus rating on Niche. Parkside features a student ambassador program where at least two students in each class are tasked with leadership roles like greeting their classmates with a fist bump or high-five at the door each morning. In fifth grade, students move on to B-minus-rated Goshen Intermediate before advancing to B-rated Goshen Middle in seventh grade. B-plus-rated Goshen High School, which is about a mile north of the neighborhood, serves the entire city. Students can also attend Bethany Christian, a K-12 private school with an A-minus rating. Goshen College, the nation's largest school affiliated with the Mennonite church, has just under 1,000 students enrolled, almost all of whom live on campus.

Elkhart County 4-H Fair a major local event

Held at the nearby Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds, the Elkhart County 4-H Fair isn’t just one of the area’s biggest events. It’s one of Indiana’s most well attended events, trailing only the Indianapolis 500 and Indiana State Fair. More than 200,000 fairgoers show up over the course of nine days each July for the fair’s carnival, livestock barns and a wide variety of entertainment that includes competitions such as the cast iron skillet and anvil toss.

College Avenue one of Goshen's busier streets

College Avenue is one of the primary east-west streets on Goshen’s south side, allowing drivers to cut across from Indiana State Road 15 to U.S. Highway 33 and vice versa. Fortunately for College Green residents, the neighborhood’s cul-de-sacs and dead ends make it a fool’s errand for drivers looking to use it as a shortcut. Ambulances aren’t uncommon on College Avenue, which leads to Goshen Hospital just a mile west of the neighborhood. Neither are fire trucks — a Goshen Fire Department station is next to the neighborhood. This is a car-dependent area, but public transportation is available on the Interurban Trolley Red Line, which stops at College and 15th Street.

Martin's Super Market makes grocery shopping a breeze

College Green is one of the few Goshen neighborhoods with a grocery store in walking distance – Martin's Super Market is at the neighborhood’s southwest corner. Family Dollar and Vietnamese eatery Goshen Noodles are in the same plaza. More than 180 businesses and restaurants are found in Historic Downtown Goshen, while dozens more restaurants and stores are located just southeast of the neighborhood along U.S. 33, including big box stores like Menards and Walmart Supercenter.

City sirens warn against tornado dangers

Though they are rare, Goshen has been struck by two F4 tornadoes, including a 1942 storm that badly damaged the neighborhoods bordering what is present-day College Green. The 1965 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak, one of the worst in American history, nearly destroyed nearby Midway and caused damage on Goshen’s north side. The City of Goshen has enough emergency sirens to cover the entire city and conducts regular tests of the warning system.
