Tree-lined streets just outside downtown
East Lincoln Crossroads is a residential neighborhood on the eastern border of Goshen’s Downtown Historic District. Goshen’s nickname, “The Maple City,” is well-earned in the tree-lined blocks of East Lincoln Crossroads, where older maples tower more than 40 feet high and shade many neighborhood lawns. Some of Goshen’s oldest homes, as well as more than a half-dozen houses of worship, are in or near the neighborhood, creating a relaxed vibe compared to the bustle just a few blocks away.
Small-town dining with big-city variety
East Lincoln Crossroads is a walk or bike ride away from the dozens of shops and restaurants in Downtown Goshen. “Our downtown is historic, vibrant, and full,” says Nick Kieffer, president and CEO of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce. Olympia Candy Kitchen, just a block from East Lincoln Crossroads, has operated since 1912 and has served chocolates to four sitting U.S. presidents. The candy shop also has an old-fashioned soda fountain and serves breakfast and lunch to patrons sitting in wooden booths or on stools lining the Formica countertop. While it’s Downtown Goshen’s most iconic dining experience, it’s far from the only one. From authentic Mexican food at Los Primos to Neapolitan pizza at Venturi and local coffee and local beer at Electric Brew and Goshen Brewing, respectively, there are options aplenty. Maple City Market and San Jose Supermarket are small, local grocers in the downtown area, while Kroger and Martin’s Super Market provide larger chain selections a short drive west of downtown.

First Fridays and one of Indiana's biggest events
Downtown Goshen is at its most vibrant during its monthly First Fridays. “It’s a community block party downtown,” Kieffer said of the event nearly 20 years in the running. Local businesses stay open late, and food vendors and merchants set up along the sidewalks. East Lincoln Crossroads is also just under 2 miles from the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds. It would be an understatement to say the Elkhart County 4-H Fair is a major event – with more than 200,000 people attending over nine days each July, it’s the third most-attended event in Indiana behind the Indy 500 and Indiana State Fair.

Historic homes with a mix of brand-new arrivals
Many houses in the neighborhood were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as this was the closest residential area to Goshen’s primarily commercial downtown. Housing styles are eclectic, with Stick, Foursquare, Queen Anne, Italianate and Colonial Revival architecture each present. As was common before air conditioning, many of these houses have large front porches. There are also a handful of homes built in the 2020s on older lots. “In Goshen, we've blended in well with the infill and reconstruction of some homes,” Kieffer said. “People are very mindful of the historic nature of the architecture while trying to push the edge to the future.” Some homes also need repair, so recent sales have ranged from as low as $75,000 for fixer-uppers to around $250,000 for those that have been renovated. Many Victorian-era houses on 6th Street are valued above $300,000 but have not hit the market recently.

Close to Goshen High
Neighborhood grade schoolers attend kindergarten through fourth grade at Chamberlain Elementary, which is just north of downtown. Chamberlain receives a C-plus rating on Niche. They’ll then go to school with students from the rest of Goshen, with two years at Goshen Intermediate before another two years at B-rated Goshen Junior High. Goshen High School, which is walkable from the neighborhood, receives a B-plus rating. Goshen schools offer English Language Learner programs to help meet the needs of the city’s diverse population.

Neighborhood dogs have a place to play
Sprocket Dog Park, in the northern part of the neighborhood, is fenced and has a recycled rubber-pellet surface. Other nearby parks are just west of downtown. The Aldo Simpson foot bridge, which crosses Elkhart River, connects downtown with Rogers Park. The park has a playground, walking trails and a skate park. The Millrace Canal Trail gets its start at Powerhouse Park and extends south for 2.5 miles along a canal formerly used to power a watermill. The neighborhood is bike-friendly thanks to its wide streets, and less than a five-minute ride from the Millrace Trail.

Land of roads named Lincoln
East Lincoln Crossroads is, in fact, where two streets named Lincoln cross paths. U.S. 33, known as Lincoln Highway for this stretch, passes over East Lincoln Avenue, which continues through downtown and western Goshen. Lincoln Highway is Goshen’s most important thoroughfare. It connects the city with Elkhart, which is some 10 miles to the northwest. “Elkhart County is very rural,” Kieffer says, “but Goshen and Elkhart have the backbone of things people want to see and do.”
Train traffic makes itself known
Train tracks run parallel to 9th Street and cut through the neighborhood, occasionally tying up neighborhood traffic. That track is a spur from a line of four tracks that run parallel to Lincoln Highway. Neighborhood residents should expect to occasionally hear the engines and horns of freight trains.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
