A tranquil neighborhood near major Goshen employers
Bordered by the Millrace Canal and Goshen Dam Pond, Historic Racemere Peninsula matches the feel of nature with an element of convenience to two of the city's largest employers. Goshen Hospital is in the neighborhood. The campus of Goshen College, one of only five Mennonite-affiliated colleges in the United States, is right across the street. In fact, the college president's home was in the neighborhood until the mid-2000s. If not for the occasional sounds of ambulances heading to the hospital, the neighborhood might feel closer to living in the woods than in a city. “It’s a quiet neighborhood,” says Hannah Scott-Carter, the City of Goshen’s community relations manager. “Goshen Dam Pond creates a picturesque backdrop for the neighborhood.”

Mid-century houses on tree-filled streets
While the word “historic” conjures images of houses built in the 19th or early 20th century, that isn’t the case in Historic Racemere Peninsula save for a stretch of houses along Main Street. Most of the land on the peninsula was privately owned until it was developed as a neighborhood in the 1940s and ‘50s. There is a decidedly forested feel to the neighborhood, where hundreds of maples and a sprinkling of spruces soar above a multitude of midcentury ranches and a handful of two-story Traditional houses. Recent sales range between $165,000 and $270,000 but are limited in this neighborhood where many stay for years.
There is a wide variety of home styles in Historic Racemere Peninsula.

A walk in Witmer Woods is a regular part of life
Witmer Woods is an 18-acre arboretum of native trees and shrubs managed by Goshen College and open to the public, and without question one of Goshen’s most colorful places in early autumn. A small bridge over the Millrace Canal dam connects the neighborhood with Shoup-Parsons Woods Park and the Millrace Canal Trail. The crushed gravel Canal Trail leads 2.5 miles north to downtown Goshen alongside its namesake canal, and a trail loop through Shoup-Parsons Woods leads to a boardwalk that juts into a natural wetland. There is also a boat launch into Goshen Dam Pond. And recreation doesn’t stop here when the weather turns cold. If the ice gets thick enough, the Dam Pond is known as one of the best places in town for ice skating and pond hockey.
Locals can enjoy Witmer Woods, which is located in Goshen, Indiana.
Shoup-Parsons Woods has plenty of places to take your dogs for a walk.

Iconic diner and more 2 miles away in Downtown Goshen
Martin’s Super Market is about a mile east of the neighborhood on College Avenue. It’s even less distance to reach one of Goshen’s most iconic dining locations, South Side Soda Shop. Voted the best chili in Michiana and the top lemon meringue pie in the Indiana Pie Quest Contest, the diner still features a 1940s soda fountain and was featured by Guy Fieri in the very first season of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Downtown Goshen, which has more than 180 businesses and restaurants, is 2 miles north of the neighborhood via Main Street.
South Side Soda Shop is a local favorite known for its hearty breakfast.

A neighborhood picnic with a pickleball twist
Each summer, the Historic Racemere Neighborhood Association hosts a neighborhood picnic highlighted by a pickleball tournament that started before the sport became a national craze. Goshen College’s sports teams, the Maple Leafs, compete against other small, private colleges from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio in the Crossroads League at the NAIA level of college athletics. Goshen College’s performing arts series has drawn artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Nickel Creek and the Indigo Girls to the Goshen College Music Center.
