The Goshen Public Library is arguably the Historic Southside’s most beloved institution. About one-third of Goshen residents are cardholders thanks to the library’s proactive approach in the community. “We emphasize community partnerships and outreach,” says Grace Thomas, the library’s Development and Community Engagement Manager. “Our outreach team goes to community festivals, events, and programs like food pantries and school nights to share about library resources and register community members for library cards.” There are no parks in the neighborhood, but Shanklin Park and Millrace Park are just a mile away across the Elkhart River. The 2.5-mile-long Millrace Canal Trail runs through both parks.Recent school changes affect neighborhood
The neighborhood’s Chandler Elementary School closed in 2023, reopening as Goshen High School’s career and technical education center. Neighborhood grade schoolers now attend Parkside Elementary School, which is just across the street from the South Side Soda Shop. Parkside receives a B-plus rating from Niche. In fifth grade, students move on to Goshen Intermediate before moving on to B-rated Goshen Junior High in seventh grade. B-plus-rated Goshen High School, just a few blocks east of the neighborhood, serves the entire city.Historic Southside Neighborhood Association hosts big events
Goshen Public Library hosts many regular events ranging from summer reading programs for kids to adult education programs and book clubs. The library also offers a bilingual early literacy program. The Historic Southside Neighborhood Association has a pair of major annual events – a summer block party, and a neighborhood yard sale. “It’s a thriving neighborhood association,” Scott-Carter says. Historic Southside is just minutes from downtown events, which can be reached on foot. During monthly First Fridays, local businesses stay open late, and food vendors and merchants set up along the sidewalks.Interurban Trolley Red Line stops along Main Street
The Interurban Trolley Red Line has stops along Main Street, heading southeast towards Goshen College and 12 miles northwest to downtown Elkhart. Main Street, also known as Indiana State Road 15, travels 11 miles north to Interstate 90.Close to downtown shopping, South Side Soda Shop vintage diner
A CVS is the only commercial property in this primarily residential neighborhood, but Historic Southside is close to a thriving downtown commercial district with more than 180 businesses. Those businesses include popular favorites such as The Electric Brew coffee shop and Los Primos Mexican Grill. South Side Soda Shop, a vintage diner that’s been frequented by both Guy Fieri and Steve Buscemi, is just a few blocks south of the neighborhood. Downtown’s Maple City Market is the closest grocer, and a Kroger 1.5 miles west of Historic Southside is the nearest supermarket.
