The birthplace of Maple City moniker
Historic Southside is an aptly named Goshen neighborhood. “This is one of Goshen’s oldest residential areas,” says Hannah Scott-Carter, community relations manager with the City of Goshen. Historic Southside is directly south of downtown Goshen on the east side of Main Street. In addition to its historic houses, the neighborhood is where Goshen’s nickname of “The Maple City” is most well-earned. Some of the city’s most mature maples are here, towering 50 feet above Historic Southside’s sidewalks.
Sidewalks and generous tree cover characterize Historic Southside residential streets.

Home to beloved Goshen Public Library
The Goshen Public Library is arguably the Historic Southside’s most beloved institution. About one-third of Goshen residents are cardholders thanks to the library’s proactive approach in the community. “We emphasize community partnerships and outreach,” says Grace Thomas, the library’s Development and Community Engagement Manager. “Our outreach team goes to community festivals, events, and programs like food pantries and school nights to share about library resources and register community members for library cards.” There are no parks in the neighborhood, but Shanklin Park and Millrace Park are just a mile away across the Elkhart River. The 2.5-mile-long Millrace Canal Trail runs through both parks.

Close to downtown shopping, South Side Soda Shop vintage diner
A CVS is the only commercial property in this primarily residential neighborhood, but Historic Southside is close to a thriving downtown commercial district with more than 180 businesses. Those businesses include popular favorites such as The Electric Brew coffee shop and Los Primos Mexican Grill. South Side Soda Shop, a vintage diner that’s been frequented by both Guy Fieri and Steve Buscemi, is just a few blocks south of the neighborhood. Downtown’s Maple City Market is the closest grocer, and a Kroger 1.5 miles west of Historic Southside is the nearest supermarket.
