Northside-Goshen
Neighborhood in Goshen, Indiana
Elkhart County 46528
A mix of early 20th-century houses, some in need of repairs
Many houses on Goshen’s Northside were built in the same era as those in the city’s Historic Southside neighborhood – near the dawn of the 20th century. Craftsman, Stick, gable-roof houses and other styles from the era are prevalent. However, while homes on the Southside are mostly renovated or well-preserved, some of their Northside counterparts need repairs. There are also a handful of recently constructed houses built on established lots. Fixer-uppers in the Northside sell for below $100,000. Move-in ready homes can range between $110,000 and $180,000.Mill Street Park a neighborhood and city favorite
Mill Street Park is the pride of the Northside. The 11-acre park on the banks of Rock Run Creek received the Indiana Park and Recreation Association’s Award for Exceptional Park Design when it opened in 2015. “It features a children’s interactive art and music play area, trails and a community garden,” Scott-Carter says. The park is part of the Maple City Greenway trail system, which connects trails that run 18 miles northeast to Shipshewana and 8 miles northwest to Elkhart. The Boys and Girls Club of Goshen, next door to Chamberlain Elementary School, is also easy to reach for neighborhood residents.Grade schoolers attend Chamberlain Elementary
When Goshen Community Schools voted to close Chandler Elementary School and repurpose it as a career and technical center for Goshen High School students in 2023, Northside grade schoolers were sent to Chamberlain Elementary, which is actually closer to the neighborhood than Chandler. Chamberlain earns a B-rating on Niche and is one of the top 50 standout elementary schools in Indiana, according to the website. Fifth and sixth graders attend B-minus-rated Goshen Intermediate School, and seventh and eighth graders attend B-rated Goshen Junior High. B-rated Goshen High is Goshen’s only public high school.First Fridays are happening in Downtown Goshen
The first Friday of each month is always a major event in Downtown Goshen that Kieffer describes as a “community block party.” Monthly themes vary. In the summer, the streets of downtown may be converted to volleyball courts, and ice carvers and a chili cookoff are featured events in the winter. The Goshen Hispanic Heritage Festival, held at downtown’s Powerhouse Park each September, is growing into a major area annual event. The festival features food, music and folk dances from the many Latin American cultures present in Elkhart County.Indiana State Road 15, US Route 33 add to convenience
Indiana State Road 15 leads 10 miles north to the Indiana Toll Road (Interstate 90). Freight train traffic is frequent on the tracks south of the neighborhood, though the Indiana 15 overpass allows residents to travel over the tracks to and from downtown without hassle. U.S. Route 33 provides a straight shot to Elkhart, less than 10 miles to the northwest. Goshen Hospital is 3 miles south of the neighborhood. South Bend International Airport is around a 35-mile drive from Northside-Goshen.Close to downtown shopping and dining
While there is no shopping or dining within this primarily residential neighborhood, there is no shortage of nearby options, including Massimo’s Pizzeria and Wasabi Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi. Downtown Goshen is anchored by more than 150 locally owned businesses, including dozens of restaurants. “The entrepreneurial spirit has been pretty strong in Goshen for a very long time,” says Nick Kieffer, president and CEO of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce. Northside residents can get groceries at Martin’s Super Market, Kroger or San Jose Supermarket. San Jose also serves freshly made tacos and burritos in the back of the store.Crime score is above national average
