A walkable neighborhood between South Side Soda Shop and Goshen College
Parkside is a tree-filled neighborhood of early 20th century houses just north of Goshen College’s gates. Though the country’s largest Mennonite-affiliated college is just footsteps away, its students live in campus housing all four years, making this unusually quiet for a college-adjacent neighborhood. Many Parkside residents work at the college or nearby Goshen Hospital. Parkside is also well-known locally due to its most iconic structure, South Side Soda Shop, which is the rare Goshen location to catch Hollywood’s eye on more than one occasion.

Early 20th century houses and friendly neighbors
Parkside developed along a similar timeline as Goshen College, which moved to its current location from Elkhart in 1903. The diversity of housing styles prevalent from the turn of the century to the 1940s is on full display here, including American Foursquare, Stick, Colonial Revival, Gable-Front and National architecture. Recent sales in Parkside range between $120,000 and $365,000. But for many residents, their neighbors are as much of a draw as the houses. “It's very family-oriented,” says South Side Soda Shop owner Nick Boyd, who moved all the way from Philadelphia to buy the diner in 1985. “The size of Goshen appealed to us 40 years ago, and even today it has a real smalltown feel.”
Parkside boasts many large homes, perfect for growing families.

South Side Soda Shop garners national attention
South Side Soda Shop is a true neighborhood anchor. “We're in a residential area. We don’t have a parking lot. Our neighbors walk to the restaurant,” Boyd says. “It's a very friendly area of town.” South Side Soda Shop is also a Goshen icon. Its reputation was already strong enough that Guy Fieri made a visit in the first season of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” and Steve Buscemi filmed at the location for his 2005 directorial debut. Buscemi came for the distinctive 1940s interior and exterior decor, but Fieri came for the reason most others do: the food. The Soda Shop, which still has a functioning 1940s soda fountain, is a seven-time winner for serving Michiana’s best chili and its lemon meringue won the Indiana Pie Quest Contest. For groceries, residents can shop at Maple City Market in Downtown Goshen or Martin’s Super Market on College Avenue.

Parkside Elementary adds to neighborly feel
Goshen College is not the neighborhood’s only walkable school. Parkside Elementary serves kindergarten through fourth grade and is kitty-corner from South Side Soda Shop. Parkside Elementary receives a B-plus rating from Niche. One of Parkside’s unique features is a student ambassador program where at least two students in each class are tasked with leadership roles such as greeting their classmates with a fist bump or high-five at the door each morning. In fifth grade, students move on to B-minus-rated Goshen Intermediate before advancing to Goshen Middle, which also earns a B-minus. B-rated Goshen High School serves the entire city.
Parkside Elementary challenges students by offering an all-encompassing curriculum.

A block party, Goshen College athletics, and the 4-H Fair
South Side Soda Shop sometimes hosts neighborhood association meetings and sponsors an end-of-summer neighborhood block party between the diner and Parkside Elementary. Goshen College’s sports teams, the Maple Leafs, compete against other small, private colleges from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio in the Crossroads League at the NAIA level of college athletics. Goshen College’s performing arts series has drawn artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Nickel Creek and the Indigo Girls to the on-campus Sauder Concert Hall. Just east of town, the Elkhart County 4-H Fair isn’t just one of the biggest events in Goshen, but all of Indiana. More than 200,000 attendees visit the fair annually, which ranks behind only the Indianapolis 500 and Indiana State Fair in single-event attendance.

The neighborhood's Water Tower Park is a block-long grassy area ideal for games of pickup soccer, football, or perhaps flying a kite. But other than picnic tables, the park has no amenities. Parkside is just blocks from a footbridge over the Millrace Canal that connects to 17-acre Millrace Park and the 2.5-mile-long Millrace Canal Trail. Quiet with a side of ambulance and train noise
The typical sounds of college life may not be a factor in Parkside, but a couple of other factors can occasionally disturb the quiet – ambulance traffic to nearby Goshen Hospital, and freight trains on the tracks parallel to 9th Street. Long trains can also hold up traffic heading in or out of the neighborhood from the east.
The Parkside neighborhood is centrally located in Goshen.
Like many in Goshen, the Parkside neighborhood is lined with maple trees.
