An unusual name in a unique setting

The first thing that jumps out about Shanklin Millrace is its name. Goshen is the only place in the country where one will encounter a neighborhood with this unusual moniker. “The name comes from being along the Millrace Canal and the beloved Millrace Trail,” says Hannah Scott-Carter, Community Relations Manager for the City of Goshen. “And Shanklin Park, the city’s largest park.” It is those features, as well as an assortment of historic houses, that make Shanklin Millrace stand out even more than its label.

Goshen's biggest park is across the bridge

A footbridge connects the neighborhood with Shanklin Park, which is just across the Millrace Canal. Situated on 90 acres of land between the canal and Elkhart River, Shanklin Park has an outdoor Olympic-sized swimming pool and diving area, a kids pool, basketball court, lighted baseball and softball diamonds, a canoe launch, and Goshen’s most elaborate playground. The sprawling wooden play area, Tommy’s Castle, features multiple slides and resembles a medieval castle. Millrace Pack, just across Plymouth Avenue from Shanklin Park, provides an additional 17 acres of recreation. Millrace Park is home of the Rieth Interpretive Center, which offers environmental education programs and hosts the Maple City Arbor Day event.

Shanklin Millrace is just south of downtown Goshen, which bustles with the energy of foot traffic to more than 180 businesses. “Our historic downtown is intact, vibrant and full,” says Nick Kieffer, president and CEO of Goshen’s Chamber of Commerce. Businesses near downtown’s southern edge, like Dos Primos Mexican Grill, The Electric Brew and The Elephant Bar are particularly easy to walk or bike to. From floating stages to root beer floats

In the late 19th and early 20th century, Millrace Canal was the source of hydraulic power for Goshen and surrounding communities in eastern Elkhart County. Now it’s a source of fun. Goshen Float Fest is an annual music festival held on a stage that floats from stop to stop along the canal, and patrons are invited to canoe, kayak or float along with the show. For landlubbers, the Shanklin Millrace Neighborhood Association hosts an annual neighborhood ice cream social in late July.

Historic homes, plus one of Goshen's newest communities

The neighborhood sprung up during the construction of the Millrace Canal just after the Civil War, and many houses from the 1860s and ’70s still stand here. Even more neighborhood homes are from a second housing boom that took place around 1900. Bungalow, Craftsman, Traditional and Gablefront houses are among the styles in Shanklin Millrace. The neighborhood is also home to one of Goshen’s most unique communities. Millrace Cohousing is a group of 14 houses built on a rehabilitated brownfield. Homeowners own an equal portion of a one-acre shared common space and a 1,000-square foot common house. All houses in the community have been constructed since 2018. Home prices in Shanklin Millrace range between $125,000 and $215,000.
