Martin Luther King Park

The Baxter Community Center sits on the neighborhood's north side with a calendar full of ways for residents to get involved with the community and get active, from the gardening programs at its community center to its line dancing and yoga classes. Just across the street from the community center is Baxter's local park, Joe Taylor Park, with picnic-perfect lawns and a playground, and on the south side of the neighborhood is Martin Luther King Park. Wealthy Street

Wealthy Street is the dividing line between the Baxter and East Hills neighborhoods. It runs across the Grand River, through downtown's south side, all the way to Reeds Lake. This historic red-brick street is lined by various local businesses, including charming boutiques and cozy eateries like The Electric Cheetah. Right in the neighborhood, this lively bistro is known for its creative, savory dishes and sizeable list of craft root beers. Two blocks down, Forty Acres Soul Kitchen and Cognac Bar is a popular spot that serves up and celebrates soul food classics. As for daily shopping and errands, there are small markets around the neighborhood, such as Wealthy Market, Sam's Super Market and Fannies Corner. However, folks may head to commercial grocery stores a few miles away for more extensive shopping trips.

Riding the Rapid, Grand Rapids' public bus line, is a breeze from Baxter, thanks to the multiple bus stops on surrounding main streets. That said, folks don't need to hop in the car or on the bus to get downtown; it's an easy walk or quick bike ride away, less than 3 miles from the heart of Baxter. The nearest ramps onto U.S. Highway 131 and Interstate 196 are just over a mile west down Wealthy Street.
