The Greenwich Village of Grand Rapids
The neighborhood of Eastown has often been considered the Greenwich Village of Grand Rapids. It's small, walkable, packed with historic homes and locally owned shops and restaurants, and close to downtown Grand Rapids. While the neighborhood's hip factor draws many people in, its sense of community inspires them to stay. "Eastown is part of a really nice homeowners association that has a lot of events and activities, and there are a lot of local bars and restaurants that bring folks together,” says Abby Cribbs, a Realtor with RE/MAX of Grand Rapids who has been selling throughout the area since 2019.
Eastown's food scene is a huge draw
Residents have many interesting locally-owned restaurants to choose from when they want to dine out. Among the favorites is Wolfgang's, a breakfast joint housed in one of the town's historic trolley barns; Yesterdog, a no-frills, cash-only hot dog spot that has been a staple since 1976; and Chez Olga, loved for its wood and glass exterior reminiscent of "The Hobbit" and its classic Caribbean dishes like jerk chicken and gumbo. For drinks, Harmony Brewing Company is a go-to for craft beer. Terra is a popular farm-to-table dining spot and a go-to for all meals, and Furniture City Creamery is where many residents finish their meals with scratch-made ice cream. D&W Fresh Market and Rite Aid are located just outside the neighborhood and offer groceries and essentials. Residents shop at the locally owned boutiques along Wealthy Street for more specialized items like home goods, clothes and gifts.
One of the most famous dishes at Chex Olga is the Jerk Chicken, best paired with a fruit drink.

Streets lined with Queen Anne, Prairie, and Craftsman homes
Homes in Eastown are mostly American Foursquare style, with takes on Queen Anne, Prairie, and Craftsman from the early 1900s. They feature three or four bedrooms, but a few five-bedroom builds can be found, too. Prices range from the low $200,000s to mid $200,000s for fixer-uppers, and move-in ready homes range from the high $200,000s to the low $500,000s. Higher-priced homes feature extensive yet thoughtful renovations, so they're thoroughly modern but still retain their historic charm. Lots are narrow, so houses sit close together, and front yards are grassy and dotted with tall, mature trees. Wide sidewalks are plentiful, lining residential streets and leading to restaurants and boutiques along major thoroughfares.
