Eastown
Suburban Neighborhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Kent County 49506
Streets lined with Queen Anne, Prairie, and Craftsman homes
Homes in Eastown are mostly American Foursquare style, with takes on Queen Anne, Prairie, and Craftsman from the early 1900s. They feature three or four bedrooms, but a few five-bedroom builds can be found, too. Prices range from the low $200,000s to mid $200,000s for fixer-uppers, and move-in ready homes range from the high $200,000s to the low $500,000s. Higher-priced homes feature extensive yet thoughtful renovations, so they're thoroughly modern but still retain their historic charm. Lots are narrow, so houses sit close together, and front yards are grassy and dotted with tall, mature trees. Wide sidewalks are plentiful, lining residential streets and leading to restaurants and boutiques along major thoroughfares.Residents get fresh air and exercise at Wilcox Park and Reeds Lake
There are two parks within walking distance from most residences. The larger Wilcox Park, which shares a border with Aquinas College, boasts 20 acres of recreational spaces, including athletic fields, walking trails, a playground, and tennis and basketball courts. The smaller Sigsbee Park includes a playground and ample green space where locals enjoy walking their dogs. Eastown is also close to Reeds Lake, a popular day-trip spot for fishing, boating, and sunbathing. Many residents head to Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse on Lake Street for indoor exercise. The popular studio offers traditional yoga and meditation. Many kids start school at Campus Elementary
Public school kids start their education at Campus Elementary, which has a C-minus on Niche and serves prekindergarten through fifth grade. From there, they head to Alger Middle School, which also has a C-minus, and Ottawa Hills High School, which has a C rating. Ottawa Hills offers an Early Middle College Program, allowing students to earn up to 60 transferrable credits or an associate degree while in school. Students who want to stay close to home after graduation can attend Aquinas College, a Catholic liberal arts school in the neighborhood’s northeast corner. The campus features historic brick buildings, a creek, and wooded trails open for public use. Aquinas has a partnership with the nearby Circle Theater, which hosts a variety of community theater performances and educational workshops throughout the year.HOA beings residents together with regular events
Eastowns’s homeowners’ association offers a series of events throughout the year. In 2024, larger events included a community-wide clean-up effort to celebrate Earth Day and the Eastown Bizarre Bazaar, which brought together local artisans to share and sell their work and offered live entertainment, food and craft beer.Just 2 miles from downtown Grand Rapids
Downtown Grand Rapids is just 2 miles away, and residents often skip the highways and take Lake Drive. They can also use the local bus system, The Rapid, which offers multiple stops along Lake Drive and Fulton Street Southeast.Eastown's food scene is a huge draw
Residents have many interesting locally-owned restaurants to choose from when they want to dine out. Among the favorites is Wolfgang's, a breakfast joint housed in one of the town's historic trolley barns; Yesterdog, a no-frills, cash-only hot dog spot that has been a staple since 1976; and Chez Olga, loved for its wood and glass exterior reminiscent of "The Hobbit" and its classic Caribbean dishes like jerk chicken and gumbo. For drinks, Harmony Brewing Company is a go-to for craft beer. Terra is a popular farm-to-table dining spot and a go-to for all meals, and Furniture City Creamery is where many residents finish their meals with scratch-made ice cream. D&W Fresh Market and Rite Aid are located just outside the neighborhood and offer groceries and essentials. Residents shop at the locally owned boutiques along Wealthy Street for more specialized items like home goods, clothes and gifts.Churches and a hospital close by
Several churches are near Aquinas College and MLK Jr. Street, and residents are also close to medical care, with the Corewell Health Blodgett Hospital just outside the neighborhood.
